Thick with herring

Went down the beach (secret harbour) yesterday arvo with the light gear to toss a few softies at some whiting. Unfortunately there was plenty of whiting but getting through the clouds of herring made it very difficult. The water was bubbling with herring from 2 foot from the shore to 20 meters out and a km or so down the beach. I have never seen antything like it used up a bag of burkley gulp worms in about half an hour.Good fun on the bream stick tho i wish i could have got a feed of whiting. I thought the herring stocks were suppost to be depleated?

As a kid what you describe

As a kid what you describe was pretty common. We didn't even bother with bait. Throw some burley then a bit of green straw over the hook to a float and a fish a cast. Not often its like that these days, at least around metro.

None the less it sounds like a fun morning even if you didn't get the whiting

 Caught my limit of whiting

Thu, 2013-11-21 16:53

Caught my limit of whiting yesterday and released plenty back. A lot of herring up close, got one and casted it back in on the big rod and scored a mulloway which I was really happy with nothing huge just under metre mark.

Also got two other mulloways about 60cm which I released back successfully.

4hrs and back home by 10ish.

Mosquitoes were deadly though..

it used to be like that when

it used to be like that when I lived in bunbury. We used to fish off the rocks as kids, no bait required just a small bit of white, red or green tubing over the long part of the hook and you were golden. Every cast would catch.

Slightly before sunset to about 10pm.

not sure bout prime time for whiting but majority of mine were caught  after sunset , almost all were way above the size limit

I agree though with you back in the days fishing for herring, whiting and tailor etc were much easier, as kids we would be out and back in couple hours with a decent catch.

You can still catch heaps of herring the old fashioned way with lumo straw behind blob but you need plenty of berley to get them boiling. I have a trusty blend that rarely fails.
