Tiagra: difference between models?
Submitted by Quobbarockhopper on Thu, 2011-04-21 20:11
hi guy
was just wondering (and I know this is an obvious question): but what is the difference between the different models of tiarga: A, WA, LRSA, WLSRA etc... im guessing that means single speed, 2 speed, left hander etc.. but which is which and surely there must be more to it than that?
Also, looking at doing the ebay thing- can usually find them for a couple of hundred cheaper than anywhere else... anything I should keep an eye out for in terms of different recent years models etc (besides the handle?)
thanks guys for any help!

Hmm there are no left handed
Hmm there are no left handed or single speed ones, so thats wrong ;)
They're all A now aren't they? I thought that was the series designation. W seems to imply Wide, and L is from Long Range and really LR IIRC. They seem to pick up a size, ie; they quote the capacity for the 50WRSLA in 80lb, and the 30WRSLA in 50lb.

but both the 50WA and
but both the 50WA and 50LRSA... i guess im just after the difference between those two models (the 50A is smaller)
are all tiagras two speed, is that correct?
also, can anyone tell me if there has been any great changes/ improvements in the tiagra over the last couple of years models, so I dont get caught out with an older model "new" one if I decide to go the ebay....
thanks!

The LRS
means Long Range Special and the 50 LRS for example has the drag washer size of the 80w for the extra drag capability from what i have been told but i am sure someone will google up a storm and let us know if that is wrong
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

Tiagra specs
"A" denotes newer series. Better anodising, nicer handle & improvements on lever side to stop drag from backing off accidentally from boat vibration.
"W" denotes wide version. ie same diameter frame but wider.
"LRS" denotes drag quadrant is designed for the next up line class. ie 30wlrs is in fact designed for 50 pound.
All tiagra's are 2 speed.
No left hand versions available.
There is nothing wrong with a new older version if the price is right but I would get the A series if you can.
I would think that some newer versions may be due out soon to keep up with the new Okhuma Maikiras. On paper at least the Maikiras have the edge spec wise.
Hope this helps.
Cheers.

Ahh so LRS just means it has
Ahh so LRS just means it has the LRS drag cam, as standard?
Pretty much the handle is the easiest way to tell the series apart. The older one has a black, hard plastic barrel with the pin in the middle, the newer one is softer rubber and more of a t-style.
