It will be interesting to see how its portrayed

Tue, 2008-07-22 10:35

It will be interesting to see how its portrayed across a whole lot of industries, including tackle, marine sales, manufacturers, charters and tourism.

I was talking to some guys from SA last week and they have a ban on snapper for one month, November, and this has lifted the stock considerably. We have our Snapper slosure here which I believe is working, maybe they should look at the other Sate models as they havn't been as extreme and are showing positive results.

I think it's the general concensus of opinion that it's a bad decision to have the closures espescially during the summer months...like the woman shopkeeper said where is the hard scientific data

I was just blowin of steam!
I am pi$$ed off, i only get to fish a few times a month and im lucky to get 2 dhuies a year! I love to take the odd snapper home for tea and i dont think it is fair that now i will have to throw them back and during the time of year when the weather is best. From the photos and comments on this site and others people are catching and releasing heaps of the V5. Im all for lowering the bag limit but bans are crap. We already have a ban in the sound for snapper and now i have to sit in the sound during the ban and catch herring while the pros catch what they want and then we have to buy it at a high price. There wasnt many real facts

Tue, 2008-07-22 19:36

There wasnt many real facts presented from either side was there?

I think the average Joe probably wouldnt have taken a lot of notice of that piece actually, IMHO it all seemed fairly mundane and watered down & Ford made the strongest argument whilst shuffeling around some papers, as if to make it appear heaps of research has been done in his favour.

But we all have to remember there's no dhuies out there is there.

lot of opinions here ! yes

Tue, 2008-07-22 21:53

lot of opinions here ! yes it is a load of w$%k what mr ford was saying ,the closure is not gonna be as bad as everyone makes it out to be but in my eyes could have been delt with alot better and maturely by the goverment but didnt as the dhuie stock are as strong as ever from personal exp ne ways so lets live with it. and from a tackle shop p.o.v if you have to close the doors because of this then you have problems anyway as this closure will open up doorways in different areas of angling. but i certainly feel for the charter boat operators of perth as this will hit them right were it hurts and will put pple out of jobs. i understand that this will inflict possible critisism upon my self but this is my pov and i honestly think we should all just learn to accept that the government is a complete joke and target other species for these dedicated months

Obviously Ford can "afford"

Tue, 2008-07-22 21:57

Obviously Ford can "afford" to get fat on dhuie from the fish mongers, stuff the working class as long as pro's and charter operaters are fine.

From what I've seen on charters the dhuies are safe, they mainly target pinkies anyway, been out on quite a few with poor results and doing a lot better in my own boat.

I feel for the construction workers and the likes that only get holidays with their kids during the V5 closed season, the only time of the year where they might use their boats regularly whilst on holidays.

target other species...

Tue, 2008-07-22 22:01

then they will start to diminish and then the government will be like oh no bla bla bla ban fishing for those species ... i can just see this happening.

good point though brenz,

should start up a thread for dhufish or pink snapper and fellas who have boats be honestly counting the amount they catch of these few banned species, it would be interesting to know after a period of 3 months etc how many are actually caught ...

Arent the charter boats going to be excempt?
Surely it will be hard for tackle stores to combat the loss of income through sales during the ban. The lady on the tv tonight said a loss of 30%. I wouldnt have thought that during the ban people would buy boat rods or reels or other terminal stuff for deeper water fishing?
At the end of the day your right about having to excpet the decisions of the government but we dont have to like it. JMO

would have more idea than most about how it will effect the tackle trade, fish for life wasnt formed because they were just getting bored was it? the whole industry cant survive on herring fisho's for four months of the year, and to think otherwise would be dillusional.

We dont have to accept jack shit !!

Al.

30 % is bulls%&t

Tue, 2008-07-22 22:11

30 % is bulls%&t . yes this will be a dissapointing loss to the industry but i can tell ya now the bream gear jigging gear etc will skyrocket because of this creating a larger range of product sold that will compensate for the loss in other areas

5,10,15,20% what does it matter

Wed, 2008-07-23 17:50

Brenz...your probably right about bream in Perth and southern waters but what do the tackle shops in Jurien, Dongara and Geraldton turn to for summer? 30% is a figure I have heard before Ford's Fiasco was released. My lure fetish is not going to carry 2 independant and 2 chain storesLaughing

Still for me the issue is the lack of science, and real factual evidence of what position we are in. It is good to be cautious but we don't need Henny Penny making the decisions.

In the end we all have to adapt to the changing conditions of the times. Like farming in these shitty years we have to change or perish

Surley bait like mullies, scalies and occy arent going to be sold as much. I dont think you will know what percent it will affect until we go through the ban for the first time!

YEAH????

Tue, 2008-07-22 22:23

And once that gets hit hard enough it will become the V6, then the V7 etc. etc.

Remove pressure from one area and others will get hit harder, brenz think about long term mate, not short term profit!!!

What about blokes with 6m boats that only use em in summer for fishing? might aswell just own a dingy hey?

There's a bigger picture than what you see from behind a counter at a tackle store, it's about our right as people in a free country being able to pursure our hobbies and desires.

I havnt spoken much about this in the past but geez I get my back up when people in the industry just roll over and take it up the clakka, then look for a short term  profit making fix.

we do have the right to vote but parliment is parliment and they dont give a toss bout us small blokes. halving bag limits would have been the best place to start for sure as i said i dont agree with the bans at all .

Call me, you got my ph. no.

We'll sort it out in person hey?

To everyone else looking in,

Anyone who knows me understands how I am passionate about protecting fish stocks, I've fought the hard fight at my expense in years gone by with the Govt. and we didnt lose, we didnt exactly win but a compromise was met and the slimey mackrel on the east coast are not providing the port lincoln tuna pens as fish meal.

If you bend over and take it up the clakka you'll never know, if you try your best and half succeed at preserving what belongs to you and fail, well at least you tried.

But you have to remember, the V5 are all gone, and soon you'll see the impacts on other species.....THINK ABOUT THE FISH! THE FUTURE! and most of all SUSTAINABILITY!!! not padlocks.

ROCKPOM: My kids will love

ROCKPOM: My kids will love to dig the worms out before the cook up!!

Good to see your objective  Laughing

Honestly what other sportfish are available at the time of closure?

1. Samson fish

2. Spanish Mackeral

3. ?

4. ?

People become obsessed with the vulnerable 5 though I would have thought Blue Groper would have received a mention as a V6.

I can see there will be a dip in bait sales for that quarter.

Probably a portion of boaters wouldnt go out. They may make up for it in the open season to some extent.

Will this closed season make an impact? Not as big as some would think I would suspect on Dhufish in the Metro.

However it appears the removal of crabbing in the sound has seen a number of juvenile species kick off.

The 5 year otucome will be interesting.

I guess its an issue because both the closed seasons are at the same time, compunding the problem? I understand why the closed season for Snapper is at this time, but why the other closure? Same reasons?

Maybe we can extend the 2lb Challenge throught the closed season to make things interesting...

alternatives!

Wed, 2008-07-23 11:47

I agree with Brenz, this wont have the MASSIVE impact that we are all thinking of in the Tackle Trade.....JMO. I have smaller overheards than the big shops/chain stores/franchise shops etc so im not worried about the new changes being life threatening to us!

We @ Oceanside will be moving forward and diverseifying. Also we will be looking at the alternatives to this change and keeping an open mind!

I agree with Tim Bailey (WA Bait Supply) re they have got it wrong and not enough research to back that up with. I'm all for change but dont think we need the ban!
