today's report
Well, with all the reports of crays filtering in, I thought I'd take some time off this morning books to grab some abalone and see if any crays were in the area. With the low swell the water was like glass inshore and crystal clear. It also meant I could really check all the nooks and crannies that would otherwise be inaccessible.
Taking my time, I enjoyed the swim and was very selective, staying away from the usual crowd and getting as far and remote from the shore as possible. It took me about 40 minutes to get my bag limit, but not because there wasn't much there - I was only looking for those real saucers. At some spots you probably could have bagged out in 2 breaths, but all were around the 60-70mm mark. No, I really got into it, sifting through the weed and in between cracks, etc. Anyway, I'm happy to report that the average size for me was at least a solid 80mm. Not bad for a little land-based punk like me, on his first season trying! A couple were past 90 but nothing could break the magical 100mm.
Spent about an hour after that exploring the caves looking for crays. We previously spotted a few in the area over the last 2 weeks and I was keen to open my account for this season. Alas, I didn't seem to be able to find anything, despite my efforts. At one point I was getting seriously dizzy! I decided to call it quits then and head home. A couple of divers with tanks were there, but most of them returned empty handed. Not a complete loss with my decent bag of abalone, but this is definately one landbased divespot I won't be coming back to over the week.
Oh well, back to the books... can't wait for my final exam (tomorrow) to be over and then I can strap on a tank and go!
Watch out seacockroaches.

I'm doing 2 degrees, one in business (marketing) and one in science (biotechnology).
I also threw in a minor in marine biology while I could.
It's been a long 4 years.
Anyway, here's how the 90mm looks compared to a 65mm I got 2 weeks ago:
Just great fun to be out there.
