what do the fishwrecked members consider "must haves" in a boat tool kit , I ask this as with the new model outboards I doubt it would possible to fix a problem out on the briny .I just have a plug spanner 6 inch shifter a couple of Philips and flat head screw drivers some fuel line a few stainless fuel line hose clamps and a leatherman

a mate of mine
years ago of dampier myself and two mates did an overnighter offshore at about 1 in the morning while I and No 1 mate were asleep No 2 mates ciggy lighter died , being a sparky he thought " will just bridge out the battery and heat up this old crab bait clip to light me ciggy" when me and No 1 mate wake up in the morning the battery was flat and we had to take it in turn pull starting his 120hp johno eventually it did start but No 2 mate wasn't popular for the rest of the trip (he admitted what he had done not 1 time but 6 times) thank god it was pull startable

Some tricks to get
Some tricks to get going
put muffs on leg and tape in place, connect deckwash hose to it and dont go too fast.
squeeze bulb, kink hose after bulb and release, kink hose before bulb and squeeze. Repeat til you get fuel up to motor.
remove half the spark plugs and rotate to a point where you'll get a longer run up til compression stroke. Running it for a few minutes like that if desperate is unlikely to cause any probs-cowling off of course!
if you cant jury rig a steering system on the outboard, tie outboard in dead ahead position.
Make up a bridle from both stern cleats and hang something with a bit of drag behind the boat, a plastic craypot on a larger boat for example. To steer pull on one side of the bridle to move the drag a little to one side or other.
Note on a hydraulic system at a pinch you can use just about anything in it including water, better than nothing.
sometimes just staying at idle will get you moving for a bit.
Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...
The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.
Everyone's just winging it.

All you need is to log in to sea rescue and put your position within 2nm and notify them of any changes.
I've got a Vhf and 27meg radio and check they are working each time I head out, plenty of anchor rope, 2 anchors and all the flares plus a couple of old sets on board.
If something breaks then they will know where to find me because with the newer outboards there is bugger all you can fix while out at sea and using Rob's tips to get you out of harms way in an emergency while waiting for sea rescue to arrive.
