tough fish

I was surprised how tough sombos were when I moved south from the Pilbara ( they are bloody tough) and then I started thinking YTK I haven't got one yet but what else is as tough on the end of your line compared to a n/w fish , at first I thought china man cod , but I thought nope sambo pulls harder , then I thought back to the days when you could fish in pond zero at Dampier salt and I found a tougher fish than a sambo ,,, its a milk fish they go of like a steam train lots of you blokes will shout me down but if you haven't done battle with a 10kg milk fish you don't realy know what a tough fish is

I agree with the milk fish ...managed to hook one in relativly light line of the naval base rockwall in darwin a few years back....absolutly tore shreds of me haha and also on the light gear I hooked a few moonfish? They come up in the bread burley trail and look like a batfish?

Pound for pound

Sat, 2013-11-23 08:21

pound for pound on lighter gear, I would say batfish, they give a run the turn sideways to use the current / tide to their advantage.

Have never caught a milkfish so can't comment on them.

Barbel

Sat, 2013-11-23 08:22

Any Poms out there might know a fresh water river fish called Barbel, they live in fast flowing rivers , got to be the best fighting fish pound for pound I've ever caught. When they hit if your bait runner isn't set up correctly you'll lose your rod and the lot.

A friend of mine once had a new set up, 2 new rods and reels, new double tripod, bottom fishing on the river Trent. A Barbel hit that hard and even though he had his baitrinner set it took both rods and his tripod in before he could get out his seat!! An expensive nights fishing.

They run to over 22lb but we found the ultimate fighting wieght were fish around the 10lb mark, I miss the river at Trent.....

What line class is used for milk fish?

Sat, 2013-11-23 08:25

Most people fish 30lb to 50lb line class on Sambos, with drags set 10lb to 20lb.

Red Bass

Sat, 2013-11-23 13:18

I once caught a red bass on 6kgs in 14ms of water, that's probably my hardest battle by a little way.

Sun, 2013-11-24 21:22

Haha, yeah Soupy, I watched TimVB get bricked by a Red Bass when he was fishing PE8 at Christmas Island, Tim  calling it for a monster GT.......we stuffed about for 5 minutes circling with the boat and it finally came out of its hole in the reef and up popped a little Red Bass about 7 kg..........funny stuff indeed!

Doggies pull more string kilo

Mon, 2013-11-25 10:15

Doggies pull more string kilo for kilo than anything I've hooked. Even the little tackers can pull off 100m under 15kg of drag before you know it

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

On lightish gear

Mon, 2013-11-25 10:24

and for the initial grunt and dogged determination to get home -- Triple Tail for me.

Pulling some off the barge moorings in Dampier was awesome. Tarpon Ozzy size on light gear aswell. And I would LOVE to tackle the ones in Florida/Cuba etc.

Big buff bream

Mon, 2013-11-25 10:34

Years ago, there were huge amounts of big buffs hanging off the moles of freo. Hooked up plenty of the big buggers but never landed one. Used to make us run along the bloody rocks until the inevitable of line getting cut on the reef. Good fun.

Giant herring

Mon, 2013-11-25 11:38

Last time I was at Pond Zero I couldn't get my lure past the Giant Herring.

They were over a metre long and jumped several metres in the air, and at times landing on the rocks.

Sent my mate over the wall with his rod and told him to just cast anywhere into the pond and hold tight, came back 2 minutes later with the biggest smile and no lure.

What a place

Mon, 2013-11-25 12:06

Pond Zero would have to be THE best fishing spot on earth. When I was up there for the last 6 yrs I knew some of the managers. With the GFC I recommended (more like begged) the boss there to open it up for a fee and C&R. That way Dampier Salt would get some income for nothing out off Pond Zero. To no avail

When I fished it a long time ago I was amazed at the various species we hooked and XOX versions. That many years ago didnt even recognise some species.

But recall Estuary and other cods, Gherring, Wolf Herring, Tarpon, Barra, salmon, BIG Mjacks and Milkies. But used bait in those days (talking mid 80's) and heavy gear didnt realy get to appreciate the fight off some.

I would pay a good charter rate to go in there and Catch & Release anyday.

Was tempted to sneak over the wall and have a quick cast on a few runs up the creek but it just wouldnt have looked good.

No mate

Mon, 2013-11-25 15:05

It is the intake pond for the water that gets moved onto the Salt evaporating ponds at Dampier. Over the years water has been pumped in with small fish/eggs. And since big predators cant get in they have grown and multiplied. Try this pic

Its a small pic but Pond Zero is to the left, and the intake is to the top left green area. See full size image

Just couldnt get a better map or photo but just google.
