Last time I was there - it was over run with milkfish, giant herring, barramundi, estuary cod, bream, mangrove jacks and mullet !

I'm sure there are plenty more as well.

I've heard so many legends about this place (assuming this is pond zero?) would love to give it a go!

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Milkfish?

Thu, 2012-05-03 10:28

Looking at the scale down the bottom of the picture, these fish are around the half metre mark. Milfish are prevalent around intake areas in the Pilbara. Try using a piece of rolled up bread on a hook.

Pond Zero

Thu, 2012-05-03 11:29

Speaking to people that come in to see me and work at dampier salt you name it as an estaury fish and it is in there. But all gaints. Influx off prolific bait has resulted in mega large cod, jacks and many many 1m+++ barra.

I have mentioned to the Manager there that I am sure to boost their profits they should charge $500 a day which for a few 1M plus speci's I would be happy to pay (once). Open it to rich Yanks and japanese and you probably could charge a Grand.

Answer: Will need induction to the site, have to wear stealcap boots, other PPE etc all for the bloody word "DUTY of CARE". What a pansy state we have become.

I might do a night raid, climb the intake wall and cast a lure, but they have cameras on the bloody thing. As far as I am aware its  trespassing and if I put brown shoe polish on my face I might get away with a slap on the wrist. Without that I might be in trouble!!!!

The last paragraph is totally said in jest for a laugh and is not my opinion or view.

I visit this area alot (work related not fishing) and unfortunatly all I ever see is alot of milk fish. I've herd the stories of monster cod and barra! So I asked someone what happened to the monsters??? And apparently for years the water coming out pumps carved out a massive hole. Recently there was a upgrade to the pumpstation so the hole was filled in with rocks then concreted over top. Some believe the the giant cod etc got buried in the hole. Weather or not they got buried there not there anymore.

its pond zero

Mon, 2013-11-25 17:49

Its pond zero , the sea water intake for Dampier salt (Dampier not Carnarvon) the water is pumped in there the whole area of pond zero is probably a couple of hundred acres , it then pumped out at what is called pump station 1b and then dispersed into evaporation pond from which the salt is then harvested with a harvester similar to a wheat harvester.
Back in the day the company used to open pond zero 1 day a year for fishing , the only stipulation was you had to let the salt biologists take some samples from the fish you caught, and you could get a weekend pass to fish on a Sunday from the causway that runs out to the dry salt stock pile, the milkfish in there are actually critical to the salt production as they keep the floor of pond zero clean, years ago they had dramas with them dying and had to install a chlorine plant and a rewash plant until they got the milky stocks back up

Thu, 2012-05-03 15:54

i just found it on nearmaps as well (not exactly hard to find). Not sure exactly the reason for the dam/impoundment though, im sure one of the workers up that way will fill us in.

Looks like a magic spot on nearmaps! Shame you can't fish there...

I worked on the latest Pond

Tue, 2013-11-26 10:31

I worked on the latest Pond 0 pump station upgrade back in 2011 and loved seeing all the fish every day. I saw 1m+ barra just sitting in the one spot chilling in the sun then right in front of me I saw the biggest flat head I'ver ever seen sun baking on a flat rock. I heard they stopped allowing people to fish there because too much rubbish was being left behind and of course spoilt it for everyone. A few years ago one of my mates jumped the pond 0 wall and flicked a few lures around. He caught 2 barra over a meter long in no time. Pretty gutsy as I'm sure he would have been axed from site if he got caught...Bloody tempting tho... Haha!!
