Tough Times?

So it seems things are reaaaallllly slowing out there in the business and job world for WA. Whats the tale of woe from your work site at the moment?
It's cost cutting central around here; cars, contractors and any small expense that once would have been no issue.

I am employed as a Lecturer
I am employed as a Lecturer at TAFE and the student numbers are down 20% - 25% in the Engineering Mechanical Trades area but a huge number of RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) requests are mounting by the week.If they cannot read, write or speak English - no thanks pal get into the classes to learn the basics of Australian communication first.
We need to look to the future for our own Country Men first. Companies do not realise they are shooting themselves in the foot by not investing for the future with willing and locally available people. Seems the "investment" of profits are no longer used for education and training just move the "profits" into toys for the boys, overseas holidays, share profolios, holiday homes - you know the rest. All aprentices learn 18% - 20% manual skills at TAFE coupled with academic qualifications and 80% - 82% in the workplace.
I have over 40 years Industry skills, knowledge, qualifications and experience (World wide) and I am astounded by the lack of skills investment by industry. No amount of Government funding will help - we have to invest for the future and this starts at school level. Students and parents are afraid of the "F" word = FAIL and there is so much soft wrap around the students/pupils that the hard facts of life do not penetrate. Then factor in "non prescription mind altering substances" coupled with mobile phones - the major hate area I have to put up with every day - and we are heading down stream at a great rate of knots.
I am facing reduced work hours and the other "crap" due to many factors - wake up everyone.
Rant over - sorry I do not post up much but very unhappy at the moment :-)

A very very true picture
Sadly you have described the current situation exactly as it is today, so far as skills go. I have been on a bus just recently where every second person was texting on their phone, I could not believe how many people where at it (texting I mean). To try and talk to the young generation today is bloody near on impossible they can't put 2 words together to make a sentence or look at you when they are talking.
To the lecturers and school teachers out there you have my admiration and sympathy, from what I have seen on aust tv the students run the institutions not the people entrusted to give these kids the skills to go on and contribute to the well being of their country.
