Towing Mobile -
hi Team!
Got a question for you all you boaties - what makes a good towing car?
i know the simple answer is power/torque and factory recommendations - but i am sure there is more than meets the eye.
My story - I purchased my own boat last year cause i got annoyed my dad didnt take the boat out enough. When i purchased the boat i had just swapped my wrx to a cheaper economical car (civic). Alas, I am somewhat dependent on my old man cause i need to borrow his work ute to tow my boat.
Well its time to get rid of the civic, fuel prices have gone down a bit and the sports bug is biting me again. Which comes to my second question - can i use such cars as wrx, lancer evo's, to tow boats? Both cars are AWD but would towing a boat ruin my suspension? I envisage taking the boat down south and up north this year as well.
Right now im gearing towards are forrester XT or a CX7...but there are some wicked bargins for 2nd hand cars atm...
and the boat in question is a 4.8m centre console!

dude to be honest if you
dude to be honest if you want to tow with a roadie then get a commonwhore or a falcoon they will tow a boat any where. im sure the evo rex or even gtr will tow quite nice but would you really want to wreck such beutifull cars with a tow ball and risk a bit of rust ... get a commy or falcoon for cheap and get another car (import ) for the 1/4 and street

when i had my skyline i got
when i had my skyline i got told it would hense why i sold it which was a massive mistake as the 1/4 was soo fun . those cars are not built to tow (although i hear the rexy can ) they are a street car imo which is also why i got quoted 1500 bucks for a tow bar for the skyline i guesss

This old tart
loved my hotted up cars when younger fairlanes, customlines, single spinners (fords) FJ with hotted up motor (all lowered so really couldn't do much but look specky in them & drag off other drivers, I'd be classed as a hoon now-a-days) etc. But JoRn if you want a work horse and driving down south or up north get yourself a good 4x4 to me diesel, good fuel/ torgue, 6 cyclinder. We've got 4 cyclinder diesel hilux bit low on power for the hills fully loaded 1 tonne boat supplies/fuel I would suggest a 6 cyclinder deisel as you've also got a bit more power for when you hit head winds or just slight off head winds, passing with slow drivers on country roads. Just a thought JoRn. Keep your sexy car for touring and chatting up the chicks he he he

Just buy a navara and bling
Just buy a navara and bling it up with some low profiles, neons, big stereo etc. Still won't be fun to drive but you will look cool and still be able to beach launch

Have to agree Simon C
seen some really sexy looking Navara's around chrome bullbars, fibreglass canopy (good to sleep in) chrome side steps, really good spotlights, tow bar etc especially in black mettalic paint....

I am a Rex Ona
and have had six over the yrs and I would not tow a boat with it. yes it has the kW to match anything but it would not have the grunt on the ramp to pull a boat IMO. You need something with 6 cyl and 4x4 is the way to go. I owned a XT Forrester and it is ratioed to be able to tow but it is still a 4 cyl. Would go the Forrester before Rex, but a 6 is far better.

yeah - a mate has the petrol
yeah - a mate has the petrol navara slightly done up in Black and it looks very cool. Towed with it up to exmouth in Jan and it was fine. Pretty good value second hand in the PEtrol. Only problem with them is they are a bit thirsty and have a smallish tank for the size of the motor.
WOuld not even try and tow with a rex. Not designed for it. If you want a rex, then buy an old petrol patrol which are pretty good value. Even a 2003 onwards diesel patrol would be a good choice. I towed my old boat everywhere with my 03 and it was great, especially when compared to the new PRado. Prado is a hell of a lot nicer round town though.

4.8 meter JoRn to tow/launch
is 14-15' launch on the beach or weed/sand on concrete ramp can be very tricky, need a bit of grunt still say 4x4 . Saw a Rav4 try and pull out a 26' foot leisure cat out of a ramp in Leeman, guess what we had to hitch up to the Rav4 pull car out plus cat, with our 4x4 2.8 litre deisel.

Your question is pretty
Your question is pretty straight forward, you see it from time to time, Small cars towing big vessels and you have problems at boat ramps. I'm sure we have all seen a few photos going around.
I would test see how it goe's, even look at your car books, they should tell you what you can tow, a cheap 4x4 can be picked up for as low as $800 now or even a holden or ford better that rusting out than a XT or a CX7
We have a Holden Apollo 85 with tow bar, has new shocks, our boat is 15ft and that has trouble towing it.

I agree spewie
This situation could happen with the light 4x4s and that does include the forrester. Outback with 6cyl will do it but price? If you like Scooby doo's why not also look at the trabeca. Now that is one nice car but my missus hates it. It will pull a few other 4x4s into the sea, but i am a scooby lover. And no I dont own a dealership!!! But check it out at the link.

At the end of the day get 6cyl and then 4x4, in any make will be tons better than the wrx. You and I both know what that car is designed to do and that is Rally. Maybe the next generation of REX will be different now that they have pulled out of the WRC(World rally Championship). Traitors.

i do understand where you
i do understand where you guys are coming from, if i was towing my boat everyday i wouldnt think twice about getting a "real" 4x4. I use my boat once every fortnight and if the weather is good chances are i'll be out with my dad.
I guess if situations can be avoided at ramps i guess it is worthwhile.
to answer my questions - what makes a good towing car is mainly torque and traction (4x4)?
i love the tribecas but i cant really afford to fork out 60+k.
the new wrxs is pumping out 196kw and 343nm i think in torque...not sure what the XT 169kw with the turbo kicking in lower for more torque - but i would imagine that would produce will spin moreso than traction.
bugger...anyone wanna buy my boat =P

Jorn - the 4wd really just
Jorn - the 4wd really just opens up a heap of places you can fish, especially with a nice lightish boat. I assume yours is an ALi boat so yes, a rex will tow it, but you wouldn't want to put in at any of the rocky river banks, or beaches that your boat would be awesome to fish from. Just saying. The days of blingbling street racers are over and will only keep dying. You could buy a nice 4wd, and then get a cheap import for track days if thats what floats your boat outside of fishing. I don't have the time anymore to fish properly and race bikes, which is what I used to do before I moved to perth.

You dont need 4x4 to launch / retrieve at a ramp
Especially not a little boat like youre speaking of, A wrx has more than enough power in my opinion. I own a 4x4 hilux and dont put it in 4wd to retrieve, At times I may put the transfer in low range 2wd but thats not at all necessary it just gets a better life out of the clutch.

Aurion
I did like my aurion when ramp launching, as its front wheel drive it was not affected by to much weed/wetness at the base of the ramp like in mindari :) 200kw of power pulls a little 15"easy :) but once I upgraded my boat the car became unable to tow in excess of 1600kg :( so now I am thinking of selling it as I have an old PAtrol 89 I must say great cars. An option for you is get an ABN and go to nissan as they have commercial specials on ... want a 2yo aurion ? :)

if you go the navara they
if you go the navara they also do gas injected diesel now and can put out up to 30% more power and save up to 20% on fuel , generally 30 ltrs gas to 100ltrs diesel .
so you can have both as others said just bling it up , there is heaps of it around
but yes the wrx can tow a boat but some ramps might not like the wrx
