Towing vehicles?

After some feedback as to who uses just a rear wheel drive vehicle to tow there rigs, type of vehicle and size rig/load being towed.

I am in thought of getting a new vehicle and wondering whether I really need to bother with a 4x4 or all wheel drive car and possibly could just go a V8 ute.

My boat is on a braked single axle trailer rated to 1250kg, however not likely to be much over the tonne mark when loaded.

All feed back greatrly apreciated!

James

Towing that wieght is fine

Mon, 2007-10-29 17:22

Towing that wieght is fine IMO its getting back up the ramp when it starts slipping! Ive seen many a ute owner try pull there boat up a ramp thats covered in water from previous retrieves and they failed! But thats just my opinon.

Keep it tight, reeeeeeel tight!

I would go a 4x4 for sure.

I would go a 4x4 for sure. Not only to make it eiser at the ramp but it opens up options like beach launching, Need one if fishing up north as some of the ramps are not to flash.

Just had a look through

Mon, 2007-10-29 19:13

Just had a look through redbook at falcons and commadores and they are only rated to tow a tonne if trailer is braked. Now we all know a V8 or even a pissy hyundi can tow a tonne but what does your insurance do if you have a prang.

Actually NOHA

Mon, 2007-10-29 19:42

Actually NOHA with the Red Book they qoute the capacity for stock standard towbar.
Hayman Reese heavy duty tow bars increase the performance. A commodore VU / VY SS ute can get 1600kg pull 160kg down force, crewmans are rated higher again. A FORD XR8 / XR6 2300kg pull 230kg down force.

My main concern isnt the towing weight as such pulling the load. It is more to do with clearance on a standard ute and as mentioned pulling up a wet ramp.

I do actually like the crewman cross8 all wheel drive utes but the fuel consumption scares me a little in comparison to a Commodore SS or a Ford XR8. Thats why I am still tossing thoughts around on a two wheel drive.

towing

Mon, 2007-10-29 20:32

Problem with towing with cars as i understand ti, is that most don't have the structual strenth and have been known to stretch so that doors won't open and shut properly, i have always stuck with 4 x 4's, have seen the utes spinning rubber on the ramps too, if you always use dry, not to steep, not sandy ramps then go sedan( not many off them around ) cheers Brian...........

Might have to stick with my first thought and go a holden cross 8 crewman. At the moment it all depends on the bank anyhow so no point getting overexcited yet.

G'day guys The issue with

G'day guys

The issue with towing isn't the ability to tow, it;s more the ability to stop. A mazda 121 will pull 3t no prob but try to make the bastard stop quickly and I will guarantee you the boat will end up in front quicker than you will believe. Many years ago when I was living in Karratha we saw a brand new Bertram 25 flybridge being towed by a brand new VB commodore ( yes it was a long time ago ). On his way home from its maiden voyage out of Dampier it came over the top of the big hill near the burrup and he tried to slow down heading down the hill. The result was absolute carnage. Boat wanted to get in front of commodore and proceeded to jacknife and roll. Horrible sight. Both car and boat were write-offs. Luckily no-one was injured amazingly. Insurance company would not pay out due to exceeding tow limit.
Moral of the story is about stopping not moving forward.

Cheers Mike
