Transporting Mudcrabs

Hi Crew,

I'm looking to bring some mudcrabs down to Perth soon and I need a few ideas on the best way to transport them.  I will tie them up and put in foam box etc, but I haven't been able to find any hessian bags to cover them.  Can I simply cover them with a wet blanket?  Does that blanket need to be soaked in salt water?  Should I refresh the blanket on the way down?  I hopefully plan to catch them the day before, but want to try and keep them alive as long as possible.

Cheers,

Adam

I know with crays they chill them down ,wrap them up and pack them in pine shavings with an ice pack to keep the temp down but not enough to kill them.Should? do the same with muddies or just ice as long as it doesn't come in direct contact with them'

adz we used to do as u are kinda saying with a nice damp hessian bag (cant see why anything else wouldnt suffice) in a foam box used to be no worries... we also used to chuck a few mangrove branchs in there dude... that got us from hedland to gero normally and unless they where damaged before hand magority came up live n kicking

transporting these things

transporting these things can be easy or tricky , as Carnarvonite saidkeep their temp down but another thing to try is packing the crabs in the esky with sawdust as well that will stop them moving around and damaging each other in transit, this is how they transport live crays overseas to Japan and so forth, if you would like a guineapig to try the crabs out when they get down here i will gladly put my hand upLaughing

Hi Adam, They transport alot

Hi Adam,
They transport alot of live mudcrabs where I am. Its simple - as long as you tie them up, they won't damage each other. Soak some newspaper with saltwater and put a layer below and over them, and then make sure the foam box is closed to keep them dark and calm. They will survive like this for days, as long as they have moisture.

Alternatively, you could ice them down, if you havent already tied them up - but it needs to be cold all the way back down!

P.S. I don't see why you couldn't use a wet blanket. You could then keep that blanket for the steady stream of crew that ask for free Exmouth holiday accomodation!

P.P.S. Or, yes you could ask NOHA. I'm quite sure he just ices the lot down.

the yabbies we get for the shop adam are sent in a foam esky, ans has some wet rag, foam etc under them and above them and a disposable ice block inside to keep them cool, i would assume same scenario for muddies would work

or else they rip each other apart on the trip  . a wet blanket is fine over the top of them we have kept them alive for 2 days with just a wet blanket but make sure they are kept cool and dont use fresh water and try and remove any dead ones asap .

hope you enjoy your chilli mud crab

if you are going to fly them down make sure if you are using a foam esky it is an airline approved (max 20 kg and it says IATA with a little symbole under it in the center. i work for virgin and when we get mudcrabs in from darwin they are in a cardboard box with soaked newspaper.
