Traveling lables for your fish e.g exmouth to perth

Last year we were pulled over and checked by fisheries on our way back from exmouth but every year we have always labled our catch including if full fillet or half fillet is in the bag . Any way to cut along story short they we so impressed with our lables they kept a sample to show people (LOL). It saved us near on 11/2 hours as they did not need to pull all our catch out they could estamate the weight .

Any ways just thought i would share them with you all if you require a template for avery lables just pm me.

Date      /04/09   full or half Fillet

Name     Sandy     Nathan    Russ    Brenden

RedThroat Spangle Red Emperor       Ranken or Estuary  Cod     Coral Trout         Mackerel   Shark       Tuna     GT     Cobia    Groper

All you need to do is put a ring around the species and name plus add the date  if your species is not on the lable there is room to write it on.

Can you just make sure Matt has got it all sorted out, I'm bringing my vaccuum sealer and 5kg electronic scales, so he can be resposible for that. I'm counting on you to be firm, but fair with him. Coax him, encourage him.

P.S. the date will need to include May (ie /05/09) as well.

Make sure your onto this guys, last thing you want to ruin your holiday is incorrectly labelling your fish and get done and have it confiscated.

Does it have to be a 'stick

Mon, 2009-03-16 12:22

Does it have to be a 'stick label' Adam?

I've done that before, but they come off in the fridge/freezer.  Last trip we used black marker pen on the bags and had a sheet with tabuled fish and weights etc - much easier.

Got to get packed before we can travel to catch fish 'snf'!  Give us a call..got plenty to sort out.

Cheers Pete

Not realy necessary

Tue, 2009-03-17 17:45

All that info is only required if your filleting at sea if your just transporting them home they only need the name that the fish belongs too....I suppose naming the fish is realy only good for our own benefit i.e what shall we have for dinner tonight!

To all the virgins..............Thanks for nothing!

labeling is required when traveling away from your residence

Tue, 2009-03-17 19:13

we were pulled over last year on our way home from exxy and we were told the same as what we researched, all fish has to be labled with who caught it , date of catch and what type of fish it is.

these regs are in place so they can check to make sure you dont exceed your total catch of 20 kg p/p and everyone with fish must be traveling with you, if you want to you can also put the weight on the bag but not nesecary

this info we looked up 3 years ago on our first trip to shark bay and also check every year to make sure the regs have not changed

Where do you find out your info russ? I was reading the on the fisheries website today and i could only find where it says you have to label the fish with the owners name.
So much info to remember and keep up with.

Fishing isn't a matter of life or death, it's much more serious than that!!!

But it also needs to be identified so hence the fish names on the lables and with the day proves that you have not gone over your daily limit. As the fishierys officer said to us if more peole did this kinda lables then it would save so much time if pulled over. The date is very important because if you have been away for two week you can have more with you than if you have only been away for a day or two bag limits that is .or they can take it that it is one days catch and you can be up shit creek.

any way it was just a example of what we did it is not what you have to do but i always say better safe than sorry .

SANDY

 below is from fisheries

Labelling your stored fish

(FRMR Part 4, Division 4)

If a quantity of stored fish exceeds the possession limit, the

fish must be labelled with the name of the owner/s.

Labels must be securely attached to each container or

package of fish, and be at least 75 mm long and 25 mm wide.

The full name of the owner must be legibly written on the label

and be clearly visible for inspection.

Labels are not needed if:

• Fish have been taken on a day trip.

• The fish are in the possession and under the direct

physical control of the person who took the fish, and

stored only with fish taken by the same person.

! Who ‘owns’ the fish? In the absence of evidence to the

contrary, a person using or in control of a vessel, vehicle,

refrigerator, freezer, icebox, or other storage device in which

fish are found is taken to be in possession of the fish. A

person who provides payment to a courier business for the

transportation of fish, is to be taken to be in possession of

the fish until the fish are received.

Landing filleted or processed fish

(FRMR Part 4, Division 2)

The enforcement of fishing rules such as bag, possession and

size limits relies on the ability of Fisheries and Marine Officers

to count and measure fish.

In general, boat anglers returning from a day trip are asked

to land their fish whole so that they are in a form that can be

measured and counted.

However, for the convenience of anglers, the Fisheries

Regulations provide for some processing at sea. The way in

Fish for the future UNDERSTANDING THE RULES 11

which fish are processed is linked back to compliance with

bag and size limits.

‘Special Risk’ species must always be landed whole on a day

trip. These are shown in the ‘Bag and Size Limits’ section.

They may be filleted after an overnight stay on an island.

‘High Risk’ and ‘Medium Risk’ species (see ‘Bag and Size

Limits’ section) may be landed as a ‘trunk’ (i.e. with head and

tail removed) or as fillets, provided that the skin and scales are

attached for identification purposes, and the piece of fish is:

• at least 30 cm in length;

• packaged flat;

• packaged so that it is easily accessible for measurement

and identification; and

• where the fish is frozen, can be measured and identified

without being thawed.

‘Low Risk’ species may be filleted or trunked at sea and the

pieces landed, provided the skin is attached.

! Note: Two fillets are considered to be equal to one

whole fish.

They really know how to confuse people. The more i read the more confused i get LOL. The way i read that is that if i only have say 10 or 15 kilo of fish in an eskie and im going home i dont need to label it as it isnt my limit.

Fishing isn't a matter of life or death, it's much more serious than that!!!

Put it this way

Tue, 2009-03-17 22:02

The easiest thing to do is, put your name on it and put a date on it with what type of fish it is.  Not just for fisheries, but when your sorting through the bottom of the freezer you can say, mmm, trout tonight thanks, the spangly can wait for the weekend and you atleast know when it was caught to make sure the old stuff is gone first.
