Trim Tabs - standard plates or Volvo trim system?
Submitted by Jarrod on Wed, 2015-09-09 16:00
Hi all,
I'm just after some advice and/or opinions on whether to go with the 'normal' hydraulic plate trim tabs or the newer type from Volvo. The boat is a 6.8m ali with a 200 Suziki.
Any feedback appreciated.
Cheers,

Lenco/bennets 100% Have been on pretty much your exact boats running Ql's and then changed over to Bennets and it's chalk and cheese!

Thanks
Thanks for that. Was there anything specific that you noticed that was better about the Lencos?

Volvos
Had the Volvo jobbies fitted to one of the rescue boats and they have packed up after about 150 hours service, not sure why but both sides jammed

bennets and lancos
Bennets and lancos are very reputuable, but cant be used on some boats due to design clashes, their size, and profile. When they cant be used, volvos are a good substitute.
Volvos operating panel is very user friendly, they are pretty easy to install, work very well, but as carnarvonite said, are a bit prone to failure, as their motors, gears, etc are all encased in the unit, which sits underwater. I have had the same failure as carnarvonite mentioned, so i dismantled the trim tab, and found it full of water and the little electric motor was fooked. They cant be put back together either....
Long story short, put in bennets or lancos if they fit.

agree with bennet or
agree with bennet or Lenco.
Had bennets on the last boat. Lenco's in current boat. Bennets are hydraulic while Lenco's are Electric. I maybe prefer the Lenco's a bit more as a slightly quicker response time and no pump to fail.
Can't go wrong with either.

Used a few different in the past. Have the ql's fitted the the boat I just bought. First thoughts are that the control panel is extremely easy to use. Nearly 300 hours on them and previous owner said never an issue. Have known a few to get stuck on mates boats. Backed the screws off and a bit of a lube and they have came good.

Thread hijack
Hey guys, sorry to hijack the thread, but is there any maintenance I should be doing on my trim tabs? This is my first boat with them & love em. All I do is give them a good wash with fresh water at the end of the day. Maybe a bit of Inox?
Cheers

Thanks for all the feedback
Thanks for all the feedback fellas. To be honest, I was kind of hoping that you were all going to say that the QLs were heaps better (I do prefer the sublety of their design) :) . But, they're not going on for how they look, so if longevity and reliability are better on the Bennett's or Lenco's, I reckon I might have to go with them.
Thanks again.

Much less chance of line
Much less chance of line getting caught around the ql's and much safer if you have guys regularly in the water at the transom.

QL work very well, compact
QL work very well,
compact and retract so they dont get knocked around.
I have had one pack it in , it still worked but was slow to deploy and retract.
It has plastic gears/ cogs and some of their teeth were broken.
Very easy to replace, unscrew, unplug, reglue and screw in replacment. 20 min job.

QL's seem to have heaps of issues, ive had lenco snd benetts, benetts are still going hard after almost 20 years, the punp has been replaced once and its on the 3rd switch. My lencos were good, i had to fix a broken cable from the installer but the rams and switch seemed good.

Lenco's leak water past the seals and fill with water as tey run in the water and create a vacuum when trimmed out.....surprisingly, they still kind of work full of salt water!
I have pulled mine apart a few times, new o rings, grease and back in for another 300 hrs so far.
