Aussie Plait then loop to loop to the wind on leader.

Same as Till but with a twisted cross loop to loop. The aussie plait seems to go better through the guides IMO, and its pretty much as close to the line strength as I can measure.

Not that I have done all that much trolling (but I have tested out a lot of the knots :p)

Here is a how-to for the Aussie Plait. Some people prefer it to braid in mono, I know I do. Ignore the comments about it pulling through and gluing, its not like its going to get anywhere anyway.

i'm having trouble at the start of the knot, the loop slips, making it smaller as i plait.

any ideas how to fix?

Angle the line up when you do each pass. That makes the plait tighter. Practise on some rope or blind cord then go back to the mono.

When you pull the line, make sure you pull so its parallel to the new line it ends up near. When starting if you take the tag and go under the main line, then loop over the main line and lay parallel (but towards the bottom/loop), then go under the right loop leg (that you just created) and pull up with the tag, it tends to jam in place which make it easier to start it nice and tight (and neat).

Then from there, put your hand in the loop and twist so the left loop goes over, then bring the tag down and parallel with the leg now on the left and pull firm. Legs should be more than 90 degrees apart when you pull.

Not sure if its the best way to go about it, but works for me (and i've tested it as almost 100% knot strength)

it takes practice to do and pulling the legs up help get it tight. much easier to tie with braid but is doable with mono, i managed to do one yesterday on the way out in the boat moving around a bit and she came up really good. It only starts to look right after maybe 0.5cm of knot length. finishing it is trickier i find with my gumby hands

I have to admit I have since mastered the bimni so I would never bother using the aussie plait for braid. I use it only for mono.

Why do you guys prefer the Plait to a Bimini in Mono. It does bring up the eternal arguement about trolling Braid (I do on my trout trolling rig) vs Mono (on my mackie etc riggs).

I have thought about going all braid with a long wind-on shock leader, then about 6 inches of SStrand wire or weld only to the lure. Seem to spook the  fish less and the short segment still protect from the Razors.

Its just really easy to tie the plait in mono and you don't get any line burn or twists like you can get with a bimni.

I usually inevitably troll braid because I only have one dedicated trolling rig but that is how the one trolling rig I've set up is done.
