Trophy 2052 with 1.7L Turbo Diesel

Calling all Trophy owners with the 1.7L diesel.

Current project is looking at improving the air flow into and out of the engine bay.  I believe the temperture is way to high due to crap design.

Looking at installing an intake fan (somewhere) and directing cool air directly to turbo inlet.  Then also an exhaust fan to remove engine bay hot air quicker....maybe reverse the bilge blower.

Any thoughts/opinions appreciated.

Completed - now for testing

Tue, 2007-10-30 09:55

Another weekend project;

I reversed the existing exhaust blower (not needed to expel nasty fumes with a diesel) so it is now sucking cool air and directing toward the turbo intake. I installed another new blower which directs cool air onto the front of the engine. Therefore, the starboard two vents are now a cool intake and the port side are now hot air exhaust.

Obviously, the blowers will only be operated when running forward. When reversing they will be off, which will eliminate any chance of water ingress into the engine.

same prob

Tue, 2007-12-25 10:34

pete,
I blew the turbo in the trophy at about 40 hrs for no apparent reason ? manufacting problem I was told and replaced with a non merc turbo for a 1/3 cost.  Merc would not come to the party . I would also take out  as spares -2 extra bolts plus washers to block the oil line to the turbo if it blows as it keeps pumping the oil out of the exhaust when you come back under normal aspiration. This will allow you to return without dumping all you engine oil or a smole cloud.

The mechanic at challenge advised me  to put extra air intakes which I am in the process of doing after xmas.I will put them near the stern light position and face the cowls forward I had thought about reversing the blower.  ALso to spray some wd40 or like into the turbo and prelube on starting if left for a few weeks. My engine when it was pulled out was corroded at rear maybe due to sea air coming in via the vents when reversing

Hmmm, Merc.....warranty

Hmmm, Merc.....warranty pending for my starter motor.  Cheers for the oil time tip.

Air intake and hot air expulsion is now brilliant - well worth the mod.

Pm sent.

merc

If you have a prob - go to merc melb which is head office and also  fire a few emails to Brunswick USA.

With your modicifations did you notice any drop in temp on the gauge. I reversed the blower and maybe dropped 1-3 degrees.

My only prob is I take in 600- 1 litre of seawater in the engine bay even with the washdown gate valve closed so it is not an internal plumbling prob. This can only be the gear change cable on the stern drive or water in the air intakes when reversing hard on fishing lumps.

Gauge is not

Thu, 2008-01-03 05:30

Gauge is not accurate/detailed enough to show temp drop - it would be minimal.  Efficiency would have to be increased aswell just by operating in ambient temp instead of 60'c+.

Got the same 600-1L.  Seal around the engine hatch is next.  Water in through stern rod holders is another entry place.  I've clear tubed from the bases of the holders to the bilge, but will block them this week to have a visual of the amount of water entry.

Please let me know what evenuates with the water entry. I will not be on the boat for the next couple of weeks.
gauge- the day it was about 44 degrees my temp gauge was showing just a fraction above the second top line  about 10 hrs use  with about 4 hrs on 4000 rpm-  On reversing the blower I was just below the indicated range second top line- the temp that day was about 34 degrees C

oil change

Mon, 2008-04-28 19:52

Hi pete,
I did an oil change on the weekend and pumped out from the dip stick hole using a hand pump. About 3.1 litres came out with the boat trailer level. I put an level on the engine and jacked the trailer way up and about another 300 ml came out. Crank case hold 6.4 litres. When I filled up it took 4.2 litres. I will try a good suction pump next time.

I did about 10 hrs out on fri whith no salt water ingress but did no reversing. Picked up a large shark and snapper about 18 nm out from dawesville. If you ever fish out of that area let me know for I can give you jetty access at sth yundy if i'm not using it.

G'day Pete That was my

G'day Pete

That was my concern with the dip stick method - are you getting all of the old oil out?  But, thats what all the mechanics use.

Did you warm up the engine before pumping out?  Was contemplating getting a suction pump aswell.  What engine oil did you go for?  I've got another 60hrs before next oil change.

I'm stilll getting some water ingress from....????  I've rebedded the port side cleat and need to do the bow railing.  Water is being forced in through the bolt holes in rough water.

Brake problems now with the trailer is the current project...but Avante now have the USA parts for others, after some pushing.

Snapper don't exist - where is the photo!

Cheers for the Sth Yundy heads up.  Always keen to explore new areas.  Was only talking to the missus a few weeks ago about doing some o/nighters down that way come spring time.

My starter motor was replaced - no problems.  2 days later same problem.  Mechanic out again  - it was a corroded wire on the starter solenoid.  Check yours - it is down below the starter, hard to get at, but doable.  The positive lead attracts all the salt - a definite maintanence item if you had/have salt spray ingress.

Cheers Pete

took a while to get back

pete,
oil was warm and replaced with mercruiser diesel oil. I was going to use castrol super rx but no marine additives. It wasn't that dear in cost.
I have access to a portable suction pump that is primed with air and need about 20 more hours of use .Will advise what comes out when I do the oil change.
My starter seems fine as I use a lot of wd40 on the engine and electicals
We picked up more snapper and a large shark a few weeks ago.
and I am about to install a new furuno 585 sounder to replace my old unit over the next few weeks

regards
Pete
