The family and I just knocked off some take away fish and chips in Kununurra tonight.
Cheapest fish on the menu was 'Red Emperor' at $8.00 per piece.
What are the chances I was eating the real deal? PMSL

its usually red emperor John
its usually red emperor John .. but its the imported stuff from indo mate .. companies like sealanes supply it cheap .. you can always as to look at the box its from and it will have the scientific name for the fish on it ,,, if the shop wont let you look then it bound to be frozen white snapper or maybe even Basa .. either way its not "local caught"

Just on that Feral, I bought
Just on that Feral, I bought some Baldshin Groper the other day ............. the info on the freezer showed distribution down the WA coast which intimated that the fish was local............. however the fine print showed that this imported from Vietnam. The same deal with the fish I would call gold Band Snapper.
It is a case of buyer beware, but the fish did taste OK and at ~$20kg the value was OK

unless your paying about $15
unless your paying about $15 p/portion it wont be real dhuie, maybe jewfish. at the price you pay for dhuie fillets , you wont find any fish and chip shop that will buy it as you need to charge too much to get costs back , let alone make any profit on it

Sample
When you buy some keep a sample and tell them that you will send it down to fisheries and consumer affairs to verify it as what they claim it. As far as know recently dna samples of all popular eating fish in WA were submitted to establish a data base to check on these cases.

but their is a fish and chip shop in Leeman where you do get true WA caught fish snapper, dhuie, whiting, etc straight out from Leeman, its not cheap but the real deal......wives husband is a pro fisho up there and it is to die for......if you are ever in Leeman next to the roadhouse on Indian Ocean drive, try it. Had friends up, had snapper and chips, their mouths are still watering way down in Mandurah. Rung them up and said guess what we had for tea tonight ^%$#@ down the phone hahahah

yeh I should upload them....
I was skipper for the day so I was fishless myself but the two deckies landed some fish, only one Barra @ 57cm and a few threadies.
Worth the learning curve though!
A mate here at work killed it yesterday landbased..........
But no wind and beautiful scenery.

you will probably find it is
you will probably find it is red spot emperor. we sell it in our shop and it is a nice fish. the size of the fillets should give it away. one thing you will find is that a lot of fish that states its fom thailand but claims to be local is actually shipped over there to be processed and then sent back to oz frozen as the cost of processing is a lot lower over there. not saying all the fish but a fair bit of it. when they say local it could mean anywhere in oz
