Tsukiji fish market (Japan)

So I recently got back from Japan, and while there I made it to the Tsukiji Fish Market,

the biggest fish market in the world. Needless to say it was chaos! Forklifts and trucks and Japanese running everywhere! Seen some massive tuna and a lot of them at the auctions! A marlin (striped I think)

a lot of other seafood inc. eel  freaky looking crabs, prawns, massive squid and tonnes and tonnes of fish

and ate the best sashimi of my life! So nice and fresh and cost me around 8 bucks for huge meal!

anyone that is  headed to Tokyo, it's a great experience and only a 10 min taxi ride and simple train ride home. Gotta get there early to get a spot though!

Couple pics, don't do it justice .

I've run into a lot of JP

Mon, 2015-02-16 19:15

I've run into a lot of JP trawlers in my time in southern ocean, wonderful country but they take everything. They don't believe in sustained fishing. They see it as hey need the fish now, so take it now.

They kill dolphin, tooth fish u name it :( the markets there are indeed a sight, but there's a lot behind it.

Yeah I'm not a fan of anyone  overfishing or taking undersized marine life at all!

But it was a great  exp and something I've wanted to see for a long time , happy I went.

agree Tassy, just look what

agree Tassy, just look what they did to the SBT fishery.

Sustained, systematic, government run and condoned rape and pillage over many years stealing fish from Australian and New Zealand fishermans quota.

They apologised when caught out but then the quota owners here had their share reduced.

Not sure how many are aware of what they did but having longlined for quite a few years even we were gobsmacked at what they had done.

Certainly would have loved to see Tsukiji, having sold many hundred tonnes of fish through there but never got the chance unfortunately

Yer when I was long lining

Mon, 2015-02-16 21:26

Yer when I was long lining we ran into them a lot. They even cut our lines a few times deliberately sadly.

As a fellow longliner I am sure you understand costly an annoying that is.

yep between the Japs

Mon, 2015-02-16 21:48

yep between the Japs Taiwanese and Indos at times off the west coast along the EEZ, we had our hands sometimes.

Looking at that video doing the rounds recently of the Taiwanese longliners shooting the "fijian fishermen" made me realise that some of the concerns I had at the time were actually more realistic than I'd imagined.

 Went there last January,

Mon, 2015-02-16 21:33

Went there last January, recomend for everyone to go there if they are lucky enough to have the chance. It was a real eye open, I can't read Japanes, but I seen a picture of a happy little cartoon whale with a big bloody chunk of meat for sale underneath it...

I missed the tuna auction (closed to tourists at that time) but seen a few large fresh tuna being filleted, 2 guys with what looked like a samuri sword taking off the fillet with one long clean stroke, pretty cool
