Tuna NOR

Last couple of times I've been out of Ocean Reef in the last two weeks I've been hoping to get onto some tuna but haven't really seen any birds working and any tuna. Seems the blokes out of Cockburn are getting plenty.

Has anyone had much luck NOR?

Do I need to go for a mission south and get out behind GI to find these... A spaniad would also be a great prize. My Fishing buddy/decky is deck keen for a spaniad.

I did manage one SBT last year when I found some birds out of Ocean Reef but nothing this year so far..

tuna

Mindarie was loaded with them in 36m on Friday , there wasn't a hundred birds on each school just a few but enough to give you an indication of what direction the tuna were travelling from there it was easy to get multiple hookups each time .

tuna

we trolled at first till the rods went off then i looked after the troll rods while Joffa cast stickbaits , then we just cast after that then repeated that till we'd had enough , leaving one hooked up on 50lb spin while casting light outfits kept them arounf each time for 5-10 mins till the 2  big bronzies ate the "teaser" a couple of times.

birds

Mon, 2018-01-15 16:38

a tip wioth the birds is to look for the "smart" birds (Terns) and watch them carefully as you can see when they are tracking tuna but not diving , they will be looking down and intently following fast moving fish often you can get hookups when there is no surface activity at all by watching the direction of the birds travel and getting ahead then judging the speed of the fish and casting across them .

That's great info Ryan, thanks for the tips mate! I've seen a few of those Terns around but just 3 or 4 of them and didn't think much of it because I didn't see them diving any activity on the water...

1 bird is all it takes! I constantly have my eyes on the horizon looking out for any bird activity, as mentioned above the little white terns are nic-named "tuna bird" on my boat. Once they start circling, hovering and especially diving I'm straight over there. Over the shallow sections of ffb or 3 mile it usually means kings and sharkies, anything west of that could be anything!

 Tuesday I cruised from Rocko

Thu, 2018-01-18 20:11

Tuesday I cruised from Rocko to pretty much west end looking for birds. Not one, dissapointed we headed back only to find birds back at the FFB not far from where we started! We casted at them for about 2 hours, not one hook up or touch! we threw metal slices (from 20-50g) boiling up at the surface. So frustrating!

 Yeah - they can be

Fri, 2018-01-19 07:57

Yeah - they can be frustrating.

When we were trolling them up we would gte huge schools under the boat - would drop a plastic right in front of their noses and they would give it a sniff and a quick chase but not hook up. As soon as we would start trolling again within seconds we would have a fish on.

Tried everything different plastics and techniques. Sinking the plastic through the school and ripping back up through as fast as we could seemed to get the most interest.

Yeah we've had our best luck

Yeah we've had our best luck trolling for them this year, not as many hookups from casting to them.
Mate hooked up on the troll last week and as he got his along side the boat we could see another 10 or so following it so I splashed my lure on the surface and got an instant hook up too

4 inch skirts on the top have been producing the best for us, but have been getting plenty of hits on the hard body shallow divers too.. usually Halco laser pro 2.5m and Dr Hook School Bully

Try dropping even smaller, i did much better last season going down to 8g and 14g micro jigs, either cast and fast retrieve or letting sink through the school and then jigging through the water column, most of the time they were taking it on the initial sink
