Hope they get around and nail the greedy pricks illegally taking crabs from the sound with some solid fines.

I should put a disclaimer in

Sun, 2009-03-01 14:19

I should put a disclaimer in i did not see all that went down but a guy in the carpark next to me asked me about where cockburn sound was and about crabs,,he had been watching the proceedings and said it was crabs.

So i am just taking an educated guess as i have seen 5 illegal crabbers off woodies carpark the last couple of days, the girs took photos and could that be a spear in the photo i wonder ? hmmm

Yep

Only been a ban on for the last couple of years.

If they catch them with crabs they should be allowed to take their car/boat then and there and argue about it later.

Yes theres a ban on to get

Sun, 2009-03-01 16:00

Yes theres a ban on to get the crabs stocks up,,a lot of folks snorkle for crabs at Woodmans Pt Carpark (the bays there) but Cockburn sound extends to Carnac island from Woodies point,,,,,,,,so its all a no go zone which extends to the Garden Island causeway in the South.

If folks like catching crabs they need to do your homework on where the border of cocckburn sound is,,maxinmum penalty is $3000 plus $20 per crab.

BTW> Theres no warning signs at popular crabbing spots in the Sound that i have seen.

How much for the triefecta

Sun, 2009-03-01 21:55

How much for the triefecta ?

Undersized crabs, using illegal methods , in a banned area i have just been told .

Out Wide theres certainly no angels here but no way would anybody here do that on fishwreck IMO

Same with Tailor if they are 1/2 cm under they go straight back in no questions asked.

not worth the risk you may

Mon, 2009-03-02 07:06

not worth the risk

you may see plenty of people doing it but the day you decide to take 1 too many or just undersize they will be there to nab you, same goes with fish, not worth the risk for just a little bit more of a feed

Have to agree Russ & Sandy

Mon, 2009-03-02 08:22

even if dhuie is legal size we release them for another day, we've had crays that the gauge just sits on with a slight movement on the gauge (either 76 or 77) and Bob throws them back, just not worth it.

That New Zealand Fisheries show on the TV, if they caught undersize fish on people's boat they impound boat there and then (till they go to court), should happen here.

Agreed Sandy

Mon, 2009-03-02 08:30

Might sound harsh, but would certainly get the message out - same could go for land fishing. I'd personally add exceeded bag limits to that as well.

Why do ya need more than 10??

Mon, 2009-03-02 09:29

I can hardly eat four crabs and I'm a 100kg bloke! IMO 10 is heaps for anyone! There's no reason to break the rules!

One or Two

Mon, 2009-03-02 17:29

one or two a year is more than enough for me,caught them professionally years back. You had to catch, cook, ice ,box them up and get them off to market, any crab with a nipper or 2 legs missing wasn't saleable and you will always get them dropping legs etc.One can only eat so many and give them away till you are sick of the sight of the bloody things.
Always preferred crays over crabs marron and prawns except for bugs, they're different.

If anyone is stupid enough to get caught with crabs they cannot have anyone except themselves to blame with all the publicity about the closure of the sound to crabbing.Get no sympathy from me there, serves them right

I for one am glad

to see a bit more active "policing" of our fishery. Fishwatch (in the few times I have used them) aren't worth the cost of a phone call - people on the ground nabbing others is by far the best deterent. They see that regularly and suddenly that undersized/questionable *insert fish* isn't worth the risk.

Its the same as a police car versus a speed camera - people will slow down for the camera and then speed up after it. If a cop car is present, suddenly everyone is cruising on or just under the speed limit.

So you know

Mon, 2009-03-02 19:51

So you know, fishwatch sends an sms through to fisheries officers work phones, whether they act on it depends upon the accuracy/details of the report and what their current activities are.  If you don't call them, then don't ever complain that nothing gets done.

With the analogy of the police car, in most cases you won't know fisheries are watching until you are done.  Its not to deter you, its the fact you've already done wrong.
