Seems way underpowered for my liking. Especially being 4stroke

I had a 70 2stroke on my 16ft ali and it was about right !

Yep way underpowered. If it was a tinny it might be ok, but not glass. It would struggle to get on the plane and fuel economy would be out the window.

I had a 60hp 2 stroke on a similar size runabout and max speed was 24kts.

depends on hull shape and condition.

If hull is old and flat it may well go fine. If transom is old and tired it may be all it can handle to last. It certainly wont be a rocket though. A hull with a flared bow and deep vee like a pacemaker will definitely work better with more hp but if it is a flat bottom inshore shape like a Caribbean sand piper it would be adequate.
What make of boat is it? What use do you plan? How many people onboard typically etc?
btw I have a Caribbean sandpiper here for sale with a 40hp on it Cheeep mate....:)

Take it

For a sea trial....never done a run to roto personally but would probably prefer a bit more hp available...glass with three on board...fuel....esky...other gear...weight could be getting up there for a 30 to do it justice...as suggested....sea trial will give you your answer

Used to have a 18ft Stejcraft

Sat, 2013-05-11 08:36

Used to have a 18ft Stejcraft - the one we had was a great boat and handled seas well, ours had a 140 Johno.  My current boat is 4.75m (or 15.7 feet) it has a 70hp johno on it and I find it slightly underpowered when heavily loaded if anything but it goes well and is adequate, looking to upgrade motor to a 90hp which will make it scoot.  30hp definately going to have problems with anything further than short trips from the ramp unless you like seeing the sights because it will be a slow trip to rotto

Save your pennies and go for the 10K price range. You will get something far far better for what you want to do.
