Yep dob 'em in. these guys
Yep dob 'em in. these guys are suppose to be doing the sustainable thing. Have seen and heard lots of stories to contrary, keeping oversize Cod, pushing everyone to fish until they have their 20 kilos each etc, etc.

get real
I don't think there are many on this board that would not strip a red throat for bait without measuring it.

I wouldn't use undersize fish
I wouldn't use undersize fish as bait, and would expect others to do the same. Whats the diff between using as bait or putting in esky. Still knocking it off either way. Pretty shameless for a charter boat to be doing it if you ask me

i agree
Simon i think the same as you iy you look at a few of the photos posted on here people dont cover up there bait boards to well and theres undersize nor westers etc sitting on them that have been cut up .also i would rather use something as bait other than watch it float off with the current .on a charter boat out of hillaries ive seen undersize dhuies caught and supposedly released only to watch them get pecked to death by the birds!!!!!!
Also i take it no one uses live bait ay
We feel nothing but a certain difficulty in continuing to stand

Then I'm afraid that you may
Then I'm afraid that you may find yourself in hot water some day, the snappers generally release quite well (unfortunately Dhueys do not), used plenty of Fusiliers, Yellowtail, Mullet etc for livies, not my future quarry.

Over the years I would be guilty of using USize
fish as bait, but i have to agree that I now frown a little at that. I still use fish for bait fresh, but now it wont be a flag or snapper, more likely to be a other bycatch like Chalies etc.
I was horrified once when I saw a person use a just undersize Coral Trout for bait.

Attitudes like that will lead
Attitudes like that will lead to the slow death of rec fishing.
Do the right thing lads, theres plenty of bait fish in the sea to be used.

Yep I think its wrong, they
Yep I think its wrong, they should be dobbed in, christ its there livelihood, and the whole marine ecosystem, people who do this are destroting. If its not size for the esky, do your best to let it live another day. Plenty of non endangered species out there to use as bait

A question:
Can fisheries put undercover officers on charter boats? That would sort a few of the offenders out! The worst thing about it is that many of the punters on board may be new to the game of fishing and think that u/s fish for bait and not using release weights is par for the course. Just sets a really bad example.
I've questioned people with undersized fish in their buckets on both Mandurah traffic bridges, and if they don't tell me to f*** off they say that it's ok because they're only going to use them for bait! One guy had double his possession limit for salmon trout and when it was pointed out to him he said "no worries, I'll just give those ones away".
Saw an episode of a popular local fishing show (Gee I wonder which one?) and they had a cray cut in half on the bait board. The hosts made no mention of it but there it was, plain as the nose on your face, for the entire country to see, despite the fisheries rule about not processing lobsters at sea. In fact, it is illegal to cut them up until they are just about to be cooked/eaten.
With all the talk about sanctuaries and Jessica trying to wipe rec fishing off the face of the earth, this sort of behaviour is going to bury us.

Well Said
We always see all these undersize fish/baited etc etc and hear all of the horror stories of "that guy" that took so many fish its not even funny but some people just don't understand how it will affect all of us in the very near future

So here's a quick question then??!!
If I head out with no bait, then catch a squid or small fish or plastics/jigs etc, then use that small fish to catch an upgade to dinner, is this better or worse than buying a catron of squid (20 times what I needed), or a bag of fish (few kg's more than needed).
Is it not more sustainable to kill one or two undersized fish rather than let a net come through and clear out a whole patch for me to use as bait?

fair enough the odd
fair enough the odd fisherman takes an undersize fish for bait everynow and then (not sayin i agree with it) but these charters are out there everyday doin it and teaching a whole new boat loads of inexperieced fishers that it is ok to kill undersize fish for bait they of all people should be setting an example for new fishers
and buying extra already killed bait from plentiful spicies is a bit diffenent to using undersized living fish from an at risk spicies, just my opinion

You guys make it sound that
You guys make it sound that this curtain charter went out with no bait with the intention to catch undersize fish and use it for bait.Did they????????To many people are ready to jump on the band wagon.Did they slaughter every undersize fish that was caught? Or was it just a few to help you catch more/better fish.If they are constantly rorting the system then they deserve what they get, but to keep a few smaller fish ever now and then and use them for bait in order for you, as an angler to catch better fish I dont see a problem with it.If you went on a charter and didnt catch a fish you wouldnt go on that charter again. But if that small fish caught you a 15kg red you wouldnt even be talking about this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fark off mate, this is a
Fark off mate, this is a charter we are talkin about not some bloke who forgot his bait here and then. They are just being cheap bastards
They are a business that should have the right amount of bait for the trip and not have to break the rules for their customers to catch something. They should also be promoting sustainable practise or they will be hurting themselves, especially as the population grows up north.
For those of us that stick by them, the rest of you rule benders piss us off no end.

The Point Is
The point is that it is illegal to take undersize fish for any purpose - end of story. And it is just plain stupid to do so.

they all do it!!
I've been on a few charters and I cant think of one that didn't use the by-catch, whatever it may have been, as bait. I even had one fillet the undersized fish up and cook them for lunch!!! it just seems that it is standard practice and although public opinion and more to the point the law says that it is illegal it still continues. Until they get hit with fines for such activities the practice will continue because your charter operator is not making a killing financially by doing fishing charters and every dollar they can save by using undrsize fish as bait is money in their pocket, which is a pretty big incentive to continue doing it.
