Upper swan bream

Hi everyone, just wondering if people catch bream on lures around guilford way? Im thinking of kayaking from there towards the city direction on the holidays while breaming on the way but not sure whether to use bait or lures...

Thanks,

Lachie

Yes mate definitely worth flicking lures. I fish up that way a lot & get plenty of fish. Bream are the main target obviously but I've also landed a few small mulloway on hardbodies around the Bassendean area.

Thanks for the help guys! I just need to know 1 thing. I haven't really ever fished the upper swan before, so where is the best place to start if I was heading in the city direction? Is there any spots further upstream from guilford that I should start at? I think I will be using some grubs most of the time.

thanks,

lachie

At this time of year there's

Tue, 2016-01-05 15:14

At this time of year there's bream all the way up to Midland at least. I reckon where to fish depends on if you have to get back to the spot you launch from or if you can be dropped off at one spot & picked up at another.

If you have to get back to your launching point then I'd probably choose to fish the area between Guildford Rd bridge & Garvey Park in Ashfield. More fish holding locations than you can poke a stick at through this area so you won't have too far to paddle back after your done fishing.

If you can launch at one spot & be picked up further downstream then I'd probably start at Ashfield & work my way down to about Maylands. Again there's tons of structure to fish.

You can expect a few flattys to jump on your line to but they usually aren't the best eating from that far upriver.

Yer shimkas in the money mate, even if you don't have your yack or can't get a lift. Guildford traino is close to the river, there is  plenty of spots to go for a flick either up fish market reserve or walk down towards the point fishing the snags between there is Guildford bridge and train bridges caught some of my biggest bream there

 I've been struggling on

Thu, 2016-01-07 07:37

I've been struggling on lures but it is getting to that time of year where I was catching up to a dozen 28cm+ fish in a 1.5hr session so I'll be hitting it a bit harder soon

Alrighty, the big girl is having a rest today and my first love is taking my bro and I up around Basso/South Guildford. Gonna give the shallow divers and surface walkers a crack.

Tides are looking great and the water will be like a warm bath which means... I'll probably donut such are the whims of the fishing gods.

This time last year I was cleaning up on bream up behind the Bandyup Womens Prison, so they'll be all through the system.

Great session today. Got onto

Sat, 2016-01-09 22:00

Great session today. Got onto heaps of rats around Success Hill me with the SX40 and brother with the Atomic Shad. We kept getting heaps of good hits but they just weren't committed and we were still a couple of hours off the real tidal movement. Moved upstream and found a good honey hole full of medium size fighting bream and then headed up past the Guildford bridge to our best hunting grounds for nothing.

After spraying South Guildford snags with lures and trolling the flats we headed back down Basso way and my brother got onto a nice 30cm bream trolling the reedy flats and we got a few more rats. We decided to call it a day but I noticed the surface action was kicking up so I claimed one more cast and cast past the point of some reeds and I was onto a decent bream and pulled in a 29 to finish the day.

Great day to be had and looking forward to more of the big girls making their way upstream.

Lots of runts

Sat, 2016-01-09 23:57

Lots of runts around Bassendean this arvo hidding in the snags. Zman 2.5in watermellon did most of the damage.

Switched to prawn baits after dark and got a few around the jetties up to 35cm with a couple bust offs I couldnt stop .
