Used outboard
Submitted by dallasthedog on Mon, 2013-10-14 19:41
Hi FW's
I was looking for some advice regarding a second outboard purchase.
I have a 1994 7.2m Leeder. The old outboard (1994 v6 Suzuki 4 stroke) has died and I am looking to repower with something as follows:
- Budget of $10k including install,
- 175/ 200 HP,
- ideally 4 stroke but this is subject to price,
- Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki
What I need advice on is:
- Is my budget right?
- Are the brands the right ones?
- Where is the best place to look (I've emailed ~10 Perth dealers and have come up with nil so far)?
Thanks for your help

How heavy is the leeder ?
How heavy is the leeder ? Might be underpowered with a 200? All good motors, the yamy and suzy being my number 1 pick! Not sure about second hsnd pricing check gumtree ?

Yes and no
Right brands wrong budget. If the boat is still good why wouldn't u get a new motor? One of the nice new 250 Yamaha 4 strokes would be safe, but see what dealer wants to talk. All motors are pretty good these days - my pick would be yammy or Suzuki. Got yammys on mine and the old mans and both are great 200 and 250. These are the older model and back then the Suzuki probably was a bit better on fuel but the new Yamaha is probably better .

I guess it comes down to not
I guess it comes down to not wanting to over capitalise the old girl. 10k is easier to get past the wife than $20/25k. She's 1994, in good nick, but still nearly 20 years old

Not sure of weight, it's heavy though
Muhling Marine said 175 HP would suffice
gumtree has 3 x 2 strokes of that size at the moment ranging fom 6 to $8k - 2 x Evinrudes and 1 x Mercury - I've not heard greetings about these engines so have given them a miss
Cheers

Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...
The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.

Check the year on the
Check the year on the Optimaxs to google issues, but as far as 2 strokes go the Mercury Optimax was a good choice
Better fuel economy than the regular two-strokes too
For your budget you'd be doing well to get one of that size but if you have your heart set on a Four-Stroke then stick to your guns

Cheers tradie
The opti's on GT were 2002. The issues on the opti's when I googled seemed to be the 2001 year so culd be a goer.
I'll keep trying - just been told there are a pair of 4 stroke yammie 150 hps and that one of those would get my boat up and going - they want $12.5k ($14k installed after cables, controller and labour) but its too much. However, If I can negoitiate well, I may get a deal done
fingers crossed

Hi D_P
The 150 HP idea came from a guy Marine Masters - I like him and he seems very knowledgale, I did rasie in eyeborw but he said it would be fine
Muhling Marine said a 175 HP would be fine
I was thinking 200/ 250 HP but then again, I am an accountant ;)

Hi mate. I reckon your in the ballpark with your price range for a 4 stroke. I picked up a 2005, 225 johnson/suzuki 4 stroke (around 300 hours) for 10k installed from a reputable dealer down mandurah way at the end of last year. Granted there aren't a plethora of good 4 strokes for sale to choose from but bide your time and something will come up. With your size boat I wouldn't be going anything under 200hp

Well done Nibbles - The repower you manage is what is exaclty what I am trying to do! Its good to know that it can be done
Can you tell me the name of the Mandurah dealer you used - I'll call them?
A few people now have mentioned the HP I am looking at is too small for my boat - I'll definely question the mechanic about it now
Thanks for the tips

Its a 1999 v6 suzuki (wich equates to 200 HP I think) - The compression on 1 cylinder is terrible, the others are ok.
One Marine mechanis said he woldn't touch the current engine and that parts were next to impossible to get, Another said I'd be looking at ~6k for a rebuild and his advice was don't bother, get another engine for it.

I've just them a message asking for a diagnostic report of the outbaord and an estimated cost of shipping. I also saw this one on there and have asked the same questions.

They are definitely the type of ouboards I am looking for. It will just come to the haggle now.

My thoughts.
1. You've been a member for over 4 years and not filled out your profile- naughty naughty.
2. Why would anyone sell a good outboard motor if its matched to their boat - many questions to be asked there.
3. Are you keen on being out on the water, is your family. Are you a good skipper?
4. Are you going to use your boat with your family. Do you value your family.
5. Then if yes to the above, forget your an accountant, Hard to do I know. Forget budgets and buy a new motor.
6. Don't take too much notice of salesman, they just want to sell you a motor. I'd have a chat to Luke Chivers, great bloke. He'll make sure the motor you get is not over or under powered.
7. Be aware that an increase in the weight of the motor will effect trim, I'm assuming that your boat had an inboard in it at one time.
8. Buying a second hand motor is just buying someone else's trouble. Do your self and your family a favour and get a new one.

Spot on
Spot on, to be honest i think 10k will only buy you problems and an under powered donk.
I'd be looking for a new/low hours (for a genuine reason) 250ish HP 4st.

You took the time to give me
You took the time to give me your thought Iana, so thanks and below are my replies
1. now done
2. a good point
3. I had an old 5.5m penguin (old 70 HP evinrude - never missed a beat) and fished most weekends with mates/ father in law off city beach. I've now upgraded to the leeder (1/2s with mate) with a view of having Rotto fmaily holidays with wife and 2 x kids (2 and 4). SO yes, I'm keen and wife would be keen. I'm not a great skipper, but I'm ok (I was alot better with the old Penguin compared to the Leeder)
4. yes and yes. and a bit of fishing with mates to
5. Thats ~$25k though and I shudder to think of spending that much on a depreciable asset when I have non- deductible debt on my primary place of residence (sorry the accountant is coming back). I am trying to get away with payinh half that and still have a good reliability.
6. Fair point and I've just emailed Chivers now to see what 2nd hand stock they have.
7. Ok noted. I don't think it ever had an in board. I think it was one of a handful of factory made outboards, but don't quote me.
8. I get what your saying, and the last thing I want is a problem or worse yet, a problem for my family. I'm sure you know more about this than me, but I think if I stay patient I can find a suitbale, good condtion and relaible 4 stroke within by budget
Again thanks for your detailed reply - I really apprciate it

Thanks for responding.
It makes the effort worthwhile. I know exactly what you mean re over-capitalizing. Many an owner of project boats on this forum have gone too far, and a 2000 model boat after spending $48,000 on it is still a 2000 model boat come selling time.
Best of luck with your journey.
