using a scaling bag to clean squid
Submitted by rigpig on Mon, 2015-06-29 09:01
I watched an episode of Merv Hughes Fishing on the weekend and they were catching squid. At the end of the fishing session when they were coming in on the boat they put the squid in a scaling bag with the heads off and threw it over the side. This cleaned the squid bodies up beautifully.. anybody done this?
go to 18:46 of the episode. warning, the stupid program drops random adverts in about 4 at a time in odd spots.. you will have to persevere with it.

Works well , just need to
Works well , just need to regularly check inner bag netting for holes otherwise you’ll get short changed ( lesson learnt )

Have been doing it for a few
Have been doing it for a few years.
I cut the tube down the stomach. Remove head / guts / backbone in one movement. Pull off the flaps and toss the tube into the bag. Dont over load the bag, about 8 is enough and then tow it for about a mile. Tubes will be white and clean

must use the finer bag
must use the finer bag otherwise they can come out (particularly if small)- removed heads and tentacles first otherwise you end up with suckers all over the inner bag and they are a pain to clean off and end up pongy.
I also run the fishing rags in the main bag if they are really dirty/slimey as it cleans the craps off before putting them in the wash and keeps me out of trouble with the mrs.... No I don't do my jocks.

Squid cleaning
Yep, been doing it for years. Also, half way back to the ramp, we stop, turn them inside out. They are then spotless inside and out.
BTW, this is an old Navy trick for keeping white unifroms clean and also for cleaning stinking mops

Squid Cleaning & Removing Fish Scales
Hey guys,
Heres a great video to show you an easy way on how to clean your squid and remove fish scales using a scaling bag. Makes the cleaning process heaps easier and less messy in the end!

I have tried this and found
I have tried this and found the squid to go a bit firm, much like when its on a hook for a while. Too long in the water maybe?
