scaling bag

HI all,
I want to get a scaling bag to drag behind a boat and take the scales off smallish fish with.
Two questions:
- is one much as good as another or is there a brand that I ought to go straight to?
- If you take off the head and cut the belly, will the water clean the fish out as well?

your fish will be undersize
your fish will be undersize if you cut of their heads. Also the scaling bag can damage fins etc and make borderline fish appear undersize

I got a 7 dollar one from
I got a 7 dollar one from bcf and it scales fish with small scales really well such as whiting and herring but struggles with things like bream. Also works well with squid.. Just gut them and put them in the bag (tie it bloody well!!) and have it about 5-10 meters behind the boat and travel at about 10 knots.
Best of luck mate

yeah I got one from the cafe
yeah I got one from the cafe at woodie point to try out.. dunno how much but wasnt dear, works great with the whiting herring etc Squid works a dream but the one cuttly we had it still needed a bit of cleaning
Yep, tie it off well... I found the best results was to put it out so its rolling around in front of the wake of the boat, so distance is gonna be size/speed related... pretty easy to work out, you can see when its working/rolling...
I reckon its a nice cheap bit of kit for the boat and saves alot of stuffing round later
Wouldnt clean the gut out as it doesnt make contact with the bag.. as for undersize, most fish youd use this for dont have a size limit just a bag limit

We have
We have scaler bags currently instore, they are very good at scaling the smaller spiecies such as whiting and herring ect, you can also put your squid in there but you do have to go a little slower as to not tear them up. As for removing the heads i hav'nt tried this but am thinking that the water pressure could tear the flesh up or damage it. The price for the bags are $12:99 FW price and we have around 4 left in store.
Feel free to give us a call if you need any more questions answered and we'll point you in the right direction.

My first use of one, lost 4
My first use of one, lost 4 of my 5 whiting and 1 of 3 squid, shheeeart! Dunno if a squid beak caused the hole or it was a weak spot at the tail of the bag. Tied a knot in it and it held up fine next use, towed it a bit slower but the squid didnt clean up totally. I wont bother with it again, risk loosing a feed and I skin my fish anyhow and it aint hard to skin a squid, but its harder to do when only some of the skin has been partially removed, works good as a heavy release burley bag

used them heaps back in SA for whiting - standard ops
the trick is to put one scaling bag inside another scaling bag - you lose no fish and they scale them perfectly on the way home. an that was in the bad old days when the boat limit was 60 KG's and we didnt really know any better... those bags took a hammering year after year.
Gooooone Fishin!

for sure!
I remember our existing one being used back in 2006 in the bays and worked a treat for the kgs and tommies. fine mesh on the inside course on the out . watch out for the little noah' s wanting a free feed, they will give it a go!

Timo-o Did you have scaling bag that has a finer mesh one in it
That is a two bag one. Suprised you are losing fish/its tearing.
Have been using mine for years with no problems on whiting/squid. Just need to make sure you dont overload it, that is better to do a few extra drags than loading it up fully. If find sticking to around 8knt is ideal , depending on the wake of your boat cause if you go to fast it will just bounce and not drag. Keep fish whole and then when you get home cut heads off and gut or fillet.

Tip with the squid. Cut about
Tip with the squid. Cut about 15mm off the tail end of the tube, this will let the water pass through and clean it. Works a treat!

Scaling Bag To Clean Squid & Remove Fish Scales
Hey guys,
There is a heavy duty Scaling Bag out there called the Cyclone. It will never fail you as its made from the same material used on trawler nets. Its pricey but you should only need to buy it once (fingers crossed)
