Verado owners - couple of questions
Submitted by pelagicyachts on Tue, 2018-04-03 14:45
Recently bought a boat which has a 250 Verado on it - a bit like E-Tec's it seems you either love or hate them - having been a Honda and Yamaha person prior I had one foot in the hate them camp -after being out for a few runs on the boat and a few days at rotto over easter I am starting to like it - scrolling through the smart craft screen though to view different gauges though - not so much!
I have read up a little on the verado forums and especially the do's and donts!, So couple of questions
1) what sort of RPM do you run at? - at 3800-4000 I am getting 23-25 knots - which is fast enough for me
2) what are you paying for a service?
3) anyone recommendations for a mobile mechanic?
cheers

Hi mate i have a 250 Verado
Hi mate
i have a 250 Verado on my 24 ft Whaler. Same as you, i was not originally keen but have had 800 hours of great service frim my 250.
I did did a few services myself but now get Ross at Ross’sMobile Marine to do my services and he found a few things I was missing. He knows his stuff and has just fully rebuilt a 300 Verado for his own boat so he knows the Verados backwards.
Ross’s number is 0402 706 880 and is highly recommended.
I normally run my boat at around 4000-4500 rpm 22-25 knots, and sit on 5000 rpm (30 knots) up at Exxy for hours on end. Only issue is fuel consumption goes up when overt 4500 but these are strong motors and love being revved. I only run 91 unleaded, no need for 95 or 98 for the 250.
Change leg leg oil and engine oil frequently and do gearbox seals at 600 hours and you will be sweet.

thanks mate - great info - I assume the gearbox seals are the cause of so many gearbox failures?
Thanks for Ross's details - I will touch base with him when I can get the boat to a place the outboard can be serviced
cheers

I wonder if the gearbox
I wonder if the gearbox shaft seal arrangement on the Verados are the same as the smaller 3 litre mercs a few of us have. It would be nice to know if we need to watch out for this a couple of years down the track once the hours start to come up on these 150s..
