Vessel in Distress off Turtle Bay Abrolhos today
Submitted by Wazza79 on Wed, 2017-05-10 14:38
Just wondering if any of the sea search and rescue members on here have any updates on the vessel in distress off Turtle Bay at Abrolhos this morning. Got a call from a mate in Gero. Apparently Craig from Saltwater Charters was in the area and offered assistance. Doesn't sound too good for the other boat though. Not sure if it was a commercial vessel or rec. Swell would've been pumping out there today too.

Yes true, even more so if
Yes true, even more so if using the public moorings.
At least with your own ground tackle you know whats there.
The moorings get flogged to death by people who ignore the restrictions on size etc

Anchor alarms are pretty useless..
...in tight mooring areas. Ok if you are anchored out wide at sea, set your alarm radius for a couple of miles. In small areas, you need to set them to a tight radius, and in my experience, they keep giving false alarms and waking you up for nothing. And yes, people just see a mooring and jump on. Any mooring exposed to swell movement will have the chain close to the bottom well sandblasted down, I've seen several boats go adrift at Kalbarri when we used to have all those moorings out at Jacques and the Bluff for when the river was shallow. Last link looked like bait wire.

I disagree
I disagree.
If you set your anchor alarm AS YOU PICK UP the mooring or let go your pick, then set the radius at 100 meters, or 50 meters you are generally ok.
If you set your alarm after you have hung back on it, straight up you've introduced an error for false alarms.
In older times when the US has "Selective availibility" activated what your saying is true.
Nowadays, there is something wrong with your GPS (or its a very old one) if it regularly plots you more than 100 meters from where you are.
And of course the way to check this is activate the track while tied to the wharf overnight and see how far it "thinks" you have moved.
In this case, it looks like hes drifted alot further than a few meters

Was on a public mooring but broke the mooring line.
My mates neice is working on the boat at the moment and his brother skippered it back to perth last week before the new skipper took it back up there.

Why not just keep
Why not just keep watches?
Have surfed the point at turtle bay. Seemed fat but could've been the tide. In saying that wouldnt want to anchor anywhere near there in that size swell

Was in Turtle Bay at the time, not a good situation to be in. Privately owned boat with an employed crew. Swell was driving it bow to the beach harder aground and wasnt budging after 930 tide was on its way out too. Not sure if they got it off today on the next high but was looking doubtful. Was already holed but not badly was what i heard.

Phoenix Update
The motor yacht "Phoenix" that was driven aground after breaking free from its mooring at Turtle Bay in the Abrolhos has been refloated and returned to Geraldton.
At last report she was once again high and dry, this time in Geraldton Boat Lifters yard at the Fishermen's Harbour.

I've heard another story of a Naiad being towed up that way and being snapped off and lost because they didn't have the scuppers open. Anyone hear of that?
