Saying that.... every time there is a survey or Dept of transport is looking for feedback I recommend dropping the requirement for a licence or rolling it into skippers tickets.

Yeah, I'm with you guys. I'm getting a hand held VHF radio and it will only get used in an emergency. I think I know enough having an amateur license anyway.

Just another piece of paper, oops sorry cardboard to add to the rest of the stuff you have to present to D O T although I can't recall ever being asked for it.

Yup I have one

Years ago you also had to have an apparatus licence for the radio as well with the vessel's specific call sign, ACMA dropped the VHF radio licence and is now the same as 27 meg & UHF.

Yep

Yes to both, licence was essential part of commercial ticket.
If you have a VHF on board do not be scared to use it, to log on / log off or in an emergency, never heard of anyone being prosecuted for not having a licence for one

And for those who regularly visit Gnaraloo, there is a repeater on Cape Cuvier allowing contact with sea rescue in Carnarvon on channel 81 and Red Bluff shop has a set there as well and will monitor it if you give them a ring by phone.

Radio Licence

Sun, 2017-09-10 07:58

I was having a chat with the marine safety inspectors last year at the Esperance field day and asked if they ever requested a radio operator licence during an inspection of an amatuer fisher. They said it's somthing they dont check and as long as you have a radio 27 meg or VHF and it works is fine for them.

VHF Licence

Sun, 2017-09-10 12:12

Have VHF and Operators Licence plus call sign supplied by Mandurah Sea Rescue that costs me $25 a year, too many out there use the radio for chit chat and don't use appropriate channels so maybe a bit of education might help.

I have VHF but not a license, a license is for commercial operators as far as I know, recs have the easier to achieve Certificate of proficiency

http://www.amc.edu.au/industry/omc/certificates/short-range-operator-certificate-of-proficiency-srocp

Though as someone with nearly 40 years emergency service experience and a great beliver of PLAIN language I expect very few will be able to remember many of the procedures or phonetic alphabet.  But hopefully people will learn enough to use the system with respect and plain language will get the job done

Cheers
