I have had an AD31, 4 cylinder inline 4 with the dou prop stern drive.  Loved it, but the universal in the leg does not like constant tight turns.  Belt pulleys rust.

Sips diesel and very reliable.

good motors, I had the bigger older six diesel and it was a good donk. I had the single prop leg, never gave me any grief.

the newer inline 4 cylinder diesels have a turbo and supercharger system, so have real good get-up and go. very light on fuel, but the services from local agent can charge like a wounded bull!

Nothing against the mercruisier, but if there is nothing wrong with the volvo, why would you do that?

Or are you trying to turn this into one of those ford v's holden things? *YAWN*

diesel Volvo would cost you about $2 per nautical mile to run, vs Mercruiser V8 petrol at more like $4~5 a nautical mile! thats running at about 18knots.
if you doing 50miles per fishing trip, that a hundred bucks saving in fuel every time you go out.
Yeah big V8 donks are fun, i know I got a 8,3L monster in mine, but I'd swop it for a turbo diesel anyday!

by the way we all assuming it is a trubo diesel? if it's an old AquaMatic 120 petrol four cyilinder, then toss it out!

if she runs ok, then keep it. But they are carbie motors from memory, and need to be set up well to get good ecconomy. They where mighty popular as twin set ups on Bertram 25 and sports cruisers.

if you go to the Volvo Penta home page and look under discontinued motors, you will find all the spec sheets.

cheers
Tony
