Walpole Estuary Mouth

Hi all,

Hoping to head down to Walpole for the weekend fishing in my mates tinny (4.5m) and I have been searching the archives on fishing down there and have some good ideas, and we can hopefully land an elusive kingy. I have also read up on what you need to do to exit the estuary and get onto the bluewater, but I was wondering if anyone would be able to provide a mudmap of how to go about it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Peter

Enter the channel via the markers, bit shallow on low tide but never saw less than 500mm under the keel, follow the channel out to the entrance, bit of an s bend and whiting on the flats here, check conditions outside, head out hanging closer to the rocks on you starboard side, sand bank on port. Be wary going outside of saddle island, things change quickly out there. Piece of piss in right conditions, you'll be greeted by 12 footers with 4 x 80 year olds in them trolling for their herring dinner outside.

LOL, this pretty much somes up Walpole at the moment. School holidays are over and the grey tide has flooded in.

At the moment the sand flats in the lower reaches of the mouth are probably going to give you the most grief, as they are pretty shallow. For your first time heading out i'd recomend it when there's a bit of sunlight (i.e. not at dawn), so you can see the channels a bit better. Once you've navigated the flats and are at the rocks near the mouth, it isn't too bad, unless there's swell. As coastrunner said, just hang fairly close to the rocky headland and its usually ok.
