Walpole question

Hi everyone

Ive been a member of this forum for a some time now but i have never posted anything so this is my first post.

I have to say this is one of the best forums ive been on and i have been on few and all that is thanks to you guys that make this froum so great.

Anyway, i have a question i would like to ask you lot, i did try to search about it and found some great info but that still hasnt answered my question.

im going to walpole on monday and im taking my boat with me, its a 5 meter haines hunter with 60hp and i would like to go fishing out of estuary which would require crossing the bar which i have never done before.

so my question is, what wind direction and strength of wind is good to go out and what swell is reasonably safe to attempt with my boat.

and if any of you guys are down there and would like to either team up and go out with two boats or be a decky to help me find my way out to do some fishing would be great.

im staying at coalmine beach till 5th of january so come and say hi.

cheers

mladen

Walpole

I have been going to Walpole for years, never had a problem with the entrance. A boat your size will be fine, just need to watch the weather and pick a good day.

The launching at coalmine should be no probs, there is a new marina there and anyway the old beach launch ramp is fine with your size boat. I always stay at rest point but there is no difference as it is just a ride across the inlet to the mouth. It can be a little tricky navigating to the channel out and it changes from year to year but if you take it easy you will be ok.

There are usually single markers put in by the sea rescue boys down there which if you follow lead you to the mouth. I’ve been going out through the mouth there for years and don’t find it too much of a hassle, just a few things to watch out for. If you give me your email address I will send you a mud map which you can look at in conjunction with these instructions. Once you get to near the sand spit you will you will see a jetty on the shore that the tourist boat uses, near this on the seaward jutting out a bit is a reef lump which you need to watch out for. Once past this you just follow the channel out towards the open ocean, just stay fairly close to the sloping rocks to your Right. As you go out there will be shallow water to your left with waves breaking as they hit the beach, there will be a point on your right and some shallow water to your left (breaks a bit when the swell is up a bit). You just motor between the point and the shallows (sometimes a marker buoy on this) and then you are fine as the bottom drops away quickly. This may sound tricky to get out but it really isn’t, see what you think of these instructions and the mud map and let me know if you want more info.

As Brad has said, as you go out the mouth there is a bit of a bar on the left that breaks when theres swell and some rocks on the right, its still a large access and shouldn't pose too many problems, if unsure, sit in the channel a while and watch it to determine size of the swell/sets etc.  As for the fishing, goose and saddle islands aren't far and you will see them once you pop past the headland.  Lots of queen snapper, pinkies, breaksea and odds n sods in that area and its not that far away.

Remember where that sand bar

Remember where that sand bar is because it's hard to see when coming back in. The channel can be a bit hairy at times especially if your new to it. Do what I did one year and follow a local boat out through it, he was going about 15knts so was pretty confident!

Can be hairy if swells up

Fri, 2013-12-20 11:00

Can be hairy if swells up but follow that advice and you'll be fine, only other thing I can think of is inbetween the islands and headland the swell can be all over the place from rebounding and such, but guess that goes with out saying,

Goodluck mate hope you have a blast, it's an awesome spot

That is a good idea to follow a local boat out. Thanks for the tip. Did even think of that.

Is there any crabs in the inlet as in blue swimmer crabs. Not those other ones

is it worth taking crab nets???
