Submitted by Faulkner Family on Thu, 2009-01-08 21:20
Hi All well we have decided to get a Hookah or a Power Dive but was wondering what people think about them
Also if someone might have one sitting around they want to sell ???
Russell has really bad ears and can not dive so we thought maybe this way we can atlease go to 5 or 6 mtrs.
Thanks
Russ & Sandy

As above...check out
As above...check out Powerdive in Mosman Park.
If those depths are going to be the norm, I would get the PowerSnorkel, plus that way you're mobile and can swim around with it. Get two or three batteries and you're laughing. Absolutely love mine.
Cheers!

The greatest pressure change
The greatest pressure change is in the first 10 metres of depth. So if you can dive to 5-6 metres without problems, then deeper should not be a problem. See a diving doctor for a check up maybe.
I've had a few operations to keep myself under the water, so if ya keen, there are ways.
Cheers Pete

Hookah or power dive unit
big diffence there, power dive units are for as you say shallow water stuff hookah allows you to go as deep as your hose will allow and proper training is required also you will need a proper dive medical before you do any scuba/hookah course (if they do hookah courses)

Don't you have to do a
Don't you have to do a regular open water diver, then a hookah course?
If you're failing medicals for a dive ticket you will have the same problems with hookah, but as Pete says speak to a specalist dive doctor and see what they say. Try the one that does dive medicals and is in Mt Hawthorn.

hookah course
never actually heard of a hookah course but I think the open water will be a minimum qualification you need I suppose the fundamentals are the same just minus a cylinder and other hazzards ie hose getting caught, run over, BITTEN THROUGH!
and of course onboard seafety ie having someone watching the compressor.
Edit: Also so many people reckon they have "ear problems" but realy a lot of them just need to be taught to equalise their ears correctly if they try to hard they will have problems or if they leave it too late same thing thats the point of a dive course to teach you to do it (dive) correctly.

Open Water
You have to already have your Open Water Certificate for that one as well.

Hey thanks guys
thanks for all the great info and help . might look at hiring a power Dive going to see them tomorrow /
Russ has had 2 operations on both his ears and is deaf in one and a hearing aid in the other . so it is a matter of the presser can equalise his ears ok so we thought we would start off shellow as his specilist has warned him from going to deep under water so we guess this is the easyist way to find out for him .
Once again thanks for all the great info guys will let you know what happens

1 Tip
when going under always try and equalise on the surface BEFORE you go down if you cant....dont bother going any further and if you can then regular small blows as you go remember you will feel pressure within a metre of the surface if it starts to hurt then it's too late up you go!

Didnt think what you dive
Didnt think what you dive with matters because either tanks or hooka both require you to equalise your ears. Have only used tanks but thought both would be same as in eart probs
So many fishing spots. Not enough sickies!!!!!!!

There should be very
There should be very minimal pressure on the old eardrums if you equalise continually on decent. This will be much easier when breathing air aswell. Again, the greatest change in pressure is in the first ten metres. If you can manage 5-8 metres, then 30 will not be a problem.
If Russ's drums are sensitive, then don't dive in any swell/surge as this can create decent pressure changes very quickly.
If deaf in one ear already...I'd be seeing a diving specialist doctor. Not worth loosing hearing in the other one Russ. But I know the lure, it took me years to stop blowing holes in my left drum - a skin graft finally fixed it!
Cheers Pete

30m isn't really any worse
30m isn't really any worse than 5m, if you can't get to 5m, you won't be going to 30m anyway.
I find I usually block my nose and blow/yawn every metre on the way down. Only time I had a hard time of it lately I was diving in the river without a hood and my neck/ear was really cold. Probably just a coincidence...

Russ There is a good bloke
Russ
There is a good bloke in Mt Hawthorn that I saw years ago - but his name escapes me. Ring Dophin dive in Welshpool. Think I saw a business card for his practise there.
Worth the effort to see a doctor who knows what they are talking about.
