Warnbro sound

Hi, new member here, long time lurker with tons of questions.

Had my boat 2 months now and feel like I've got used to the way it handles in most sorts of conditions now. It's a swiftcraft 5.3 meter with a 90hp, have taken to rottnest once on a good day although skipped over a reef as well as a call out to sea rescue with engine problems and an incident with a buoy early on at night lol. Anyway, now the novelty of boating has worn off its all about the fishing.

Most of my fishing has been in Warnbro sound and I've really caught sweet f.a apart from a few 50cm tailor, garfish, a boltcutter and way too many trumpeters. I've been given a hundred different co ords for the tyre reef and sounded it more times to mention with no luck. Tried the D9 once and carnac with no luck apart from a nice bream. Warnbro sound really seems dead to me not a lot of structure although to be honest I haven't been too far up around the reefs due to being a bit worried about all the breaking waves out there.

Also I'm looking to join a club or something seeing as the girlfriend is seasick in a one meter swell and my mates are t into the fishing. Any clubs around rockingham or cockburn sound? Cheers guys

Welcome mate. The tyre reef

Mon, 2013-03-18 05:41

Welcome mate. The tyre reef is pretty scattered over a large area, it's not a solid structure anymore. What sounder are you running? Try a couple hundred metres north from the shark buoy and straight out from the big carpark/lookout on warnbro beach. Only fished the area a couple times, it's plagued by trumpeter and butterfish, and a few lil chopper tailor thrown in too.
Go out behind the reefs on a calm day lining up the markers out near tub rock, we've caught pinkies, Dhuies, Skippy etc. just behind the reefs in 13m and that was on a jetski so you shouldn't have a problem in your boat..

Id steer clear of breaking reefs until you have more experience.

A nice place to venture a little further is head west (around the reef not over it!) from point peron and fish the 5 fathom bank behind garden island. Lots of crap fish but should get a feed of skippy, blackarse or a like. Added bonus is if you luck out a quick trip into the sound to at least get a feed of herring and squid.

Oh ok, yeh I got the impression it's been scattered now couple of small lumps everywhere over the area, this weekend think ill head  over to the five fathom, O see what you mean about point peron much easier access to the bank, also with the pinks where do they go once the breeding season is over? I assume back out into te deeper water now?

They pretty much just scatter

They pretty much just scatter out over the reefs and structure. I lost one last time I fished the outside reefs of warnbro sound about a month ago

Hi mate, I have nearly the

Hi mate, I have nearly the same boat, mines a swiftcraft explorer 18.6 ft with a 90 hp, not a bullet by any means but a great safe and dry ride, Ive had mine for about 2 years now and if you pick your days weather wise you can go as far as your fuel tank will allow. I've had my tub 55 kms out and come back in a 15 knot easterly no problems, but you need to spend the time understanding how your boat rides and reacts in chop and swell. I head out from point perion find it the best ramp around. If your after some good fishing and you have a chart plotter head out to the 40 mtr line and start sounding, cray pots are always a great place to look especially if there in a bunch of 3 or 4. When there is a massave line it normally means theve just dumped the extra pots over the side. If your after some company until you feel comfortable traveling pm me you contact number, I normally go out alone early morning (4ish) in the weekend weather and work permitting,

Hi fellow Swift Craft owners!

Hi fellow Swift Craft owners! I to have the Explorer and a 24' Sportsman, we should start a club as I know a few others that have them, great sea boats.

On the tyre wreck, if your talking about the one off long point, then its still there and in good nic, some of the smaller ones north are still there too.

IMO you need to go past the 40m line to start getting good fish, Dhu, BB, Baldies Big KG etc.

If you feel like tagging along one weekend just send a PM, allways safer with 2 boats.

A good GPS will show were the reefs are and lead markers for safe passage.

 Hey Pominoz, i joined up

 Hey Pominoz,

i joined up with the Cockburn Power Boat Club, nice club, great facilities and everyone is dead friendly and helpful too. You also get use of their private facilities which is a bonus.

as for the fishing in that area; don't get too despondent I've been fishing the sound, garden and Carnac for 18months now and only starting to find some good ground which hold fish. Just stick with it and keep looking for that structure. When I first started I'd use the depth contour lines as a starting point then zigzag around to try to find a nice drop off, anchor up current, burley like mad and draw on my limited patience to give the fish time to follow the trail! There's a few "safe" wrecks around the 5 fathom bank too that aren't much to look at on the sounder but do produce a bit more regularly than the open ground

cheers WCP

 Thanks for the replies

Thanks for the replies always looking to tag along a lot safer with someone else around, keen to get out to the five fathom this weekend weather permitting so ill shoot you a pm. The swifties seem a good boat, power through the chop but I do struggle with a following sea with it, still learning the ropes. So going out into the FFB is a better shot by the looks of it, will have a look at the cockburn power boat club facilities look good nice not to worry about break in's.
