Would entirely agree sharks have ALL been tarred with the same brush BUT whites should be considered the exception.

Got or rather had some magic spots to see nurses, bronzies reef etc and loved seeing them, yes they are inquisitive but for the most part nothing more than that.....whites on the other hand bite inquisitively to see if what is in front of them edible particularly when it looks seal like

can I please be there when you personally deliver that opinion to a 5 metre GW? And yes, I have an extensive diving background over many years, including abs in SA, and used to take that view you currently have. Fact now is, if they are not around, fine. If they are present, recent history of fatalities would indicate there is some degree of risk attached to having a GW turn up while you are in the water// sarcasm.

Been swimming and diving as long as you ( almost) also still here .But the increase in whites lately ( due to snapper spawn). Getting out of control. I will still cont to dive. Up nrth Sharks are gay billions of fish to feed on. I still believe whites are coming in to give birth ( in both sounds) no proof ,not expert. Makes sense shelterd water no predators good food supply . Shark smart I use .There updates are very very slow.??? Everyone always uses cars, when comparing sharks ??? Great whites seal population

Wed, 2015-10-28 16:00

Does anyone know if the seal population that inhabits Carnac Island (or used to) has been decreasing or has disappeared, or has it increased at all. Just thinking out loud that the increase in sightings of G W may be related to the seal population. Or to be more correct I think they are sea lions, I stand being corrected on just exactly what they are.

if you had read what I said

Wed, 2015-10-28 19:56

I made the point that the existence of sharks in the ocean should not be a deterrent to diving. I also said that if a GW WAS KNOWN TO BE IN THE AREA, it is being somewhat head in the sand , or trying to make a foolish, dogmatic point, by actually going diving in that area, at that time. And please don't set up silly comparisons like driving your car, been there, done that, probably made such foolish comparisons when I was younger and sillier, too.  If you jump in on top of a GW in a feeding mood, I would say that your chances of dying in a car crash would be somewhat less than being the victim of an attack.

Ok, let's set up another argument, if you want to play it this way. if you were about to dive, and saw a GW circling your boat, would you enter the water? Or if you had seen one close by  that morning  , would you? if you had seen a seal taken, would you? How far do you push your particular viewpoint? I have dived for 50 years at this point, and for most of that I rarely saw a shark, and said just what you are saying now, because it was true. But around the area in question, at this time, it would appear not .

Marine Boy, I'm sick of all the bee sting, bull in a paddock car crash shit , fact is the White population off Perth is increasing. I've surfed dived blah blah blah since I was A kid as well but many watermen I know are more wary now than ever. I have three kids  and I don't think they will enter the water with same care free nature that I did. That will be a shame if the numbers exponentially increase in the coming decades. By the way I will be cray diving this weekend. Most people that comment on this are distant observers or part of the PETA rent  a crowd. Drum lines and nets required to take out a couple of hundred locally. This is only my opinion with no scientific evidence just experience. Plus I'm sick of people saying they are coming in because of nothing to eat. I,m catching/seeing more fish, whales seals than any time in my short life on the planet. Surfed the whole coast of Australia including Cactus, Coffin Bay and Yorke Peninsula, more wary of Stragglers to Warnbro now!

Wed, 2015-11-04 09:09

Yep they are coming in because there is more to eat and easier to catch. You only have to look at a few of the Cockburn sound snapper pics to see the amount of sharkings. Breeding fish etc are slower and easier prey as they congregate etc.

Thank you for the heads up.....it is important we keep doing that. Don't be deterred.

The driving / road risk is just not a fair comparison......Yes people are killed and maimed in car ACCIDENTS regularly......but cars never ever stalk you down and try to eat you.

The fear of being eaten is a healthy primal fear..........

I'm still surfing and diving...I am more aware and cautious then I was in years past, No more surfing until dark . Only diving on clear days...

Done a salvage job last week with a bunch of commercial divers, the 4 most experienced all had stories about whites. 2 of them x-abalone divers from down south and Kalbarri gave that up because of them, and all said they are more worried about whites now more than ever. Really gets ya thinking when even divers that are in the water every day tell you they are scared of em.

Test shark shield

Wed, 2015-11-04 07:24

Has anyone hung their shark shield over the side of the boat when one has approached to test the reaction.
I am still diving with my son , both wearing shark shields but Im not really convinced about their effectiveness. And with growing grandchildren with a love of the water its a shame that their lives have to be threatened every time they go for a swim.
Eventually they will breed up enough , increasing the threat to a point where a cull is required but then we will have to kill more of them so it makes sense to me to do it now.
Also I struggle to understand why we can carry firearms to shoot Roos ,goats, pigs etc but can not carry protection for ourselves when being threatened underwater , Licence required of course.

Wed, 2015-11-04 11:26

I have just read the post about class H firearm licences and the reasons you are not allowed to have what is called a smokie or power head . Has anyone ever applied for a licence for such a thing using self defence as a reason for requiring one.

Surely that would be a justifiable reason for a licence and using the past history of attacks on divers, spear fishermen in recent times it's not like you are seeking one in case you get attacked by a polar bear or some other abstract reason.

Just a thought.

Sharkshields

Wed, 2015-11-04 12:51

Going to put my 2c worth in here and that may be all it's worth.

Over 10 years ago, after some hairy situations on scuba, i decided to do some research on the sharkshields in prep to buying one. I ended up talking to a guy who was involved in freedive spearfishing comps. His take on it was the electrical signal works well on a shark that is just having a poke around. If the shark has decided to have a chew, like the snapper senario above, then it will not work. He also had a theory that the signal, when diluted with distance, actually bought the sharks in to have a look as they normally pick up minute electrical impulses from prey. The diluted electrical impulses from the sharkshield at distance is something they have not felt before so they come in to check it out, and they can detect it from a LOOONG way out.

His take on it was if you are going in the water with others then all have the shield or nobody.

I decided to save my money but my dive buddy's wife made him get one. I dont dive with him anymore.

It doesn't take to much effort to find real data / research on the shark shield.

http://www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2012/06/20/3529306.htm

No suggestion that the shark shield attracts sharks and as for stopping a full on attack, perhaps the towed seals would be the best representation. Read into it what you will.

Some numbers

Wed, 2015-11-11 17:22

You can find this data publicly available out there, but I think it's worth mentioning.

There is an estimated 5 to 10 thousand Great White Sharks swimming around Australia's 30+ thousand kilometres of coastline (estimated about 1000 GWSs around South Africa).

By the 1990s, Great White numbers globally had been in dramatic decline, hence their current protected status.

About 100-500 Great Whites are killed by Humans each year (protective netting, drum lines, bycatch etc...).

Great White's generally roam at about 3km/hr and often travel thousands of kms within months, usually travelling in the deeper waters 30+ kms offshore. They are generally not territorial (unlike say a Tiger shark), although Australia has some hotspots with estimated numbers of about 200 Great Whites in about a 260km square area (dangerous reef, SA).

Great Whites are generally not dangerous in their early years, born at 1.2-1.5m long. At lengths of about 2.7m and above they feed primarily on mammals (seals, whales, etc...). Several documentaries show that at lengths less than 2.7m they don't appear to be aggressive to humans. They can grow to 6m and 40years of age, females bigger than males.

Statistically, ignoring deaths caused by GWSs, Scuba divers in Australia have about a 1 in 200,000 chance of dying each dive (>10 deaths/yr). In many other countries, this number is as high as 1 in 10,000. There is an average of less than 1 scuba diver per year killed by GWSs (in Aus out of an estimated 2 million scuba dives / yr).

Obviously, diving at Dangerous Reef, SA carries a higher risk than coral spectating on the Barrier Reef.
