Was Scared today

Went for a surf today at trigg, and with all what is happening with the sharks at the moment it was in the back of my mind. Anyway, I had a big (3ft wide by 10ft long) dark object move a few feet away from me, and the water was all stirred up so I couldn't make out the object, anyway after about 10 seconds I made it out to be a huge clump of seaweed....

ammo jetty....

Fri, 2009-01-02 02:51

I went for a walk down the ammo jetty just on sun set last night and there was a police boat cruising up and down just 50m off the jetty with blue lights flashing, not long after that the copper chopper flew over from freo way, done a few laps of the area and headed back. (getting dark by this stage) i noticed no one was swimming so i asked a guy on the jetty if he knew what the story was, he tells me the cop boat cruised over to the jetty and over the load speacker told everyone to get out of the water as there had been a shark sighting in the area!! WHEN IT RAINS IT POURS AY!!

Dean hate that feeling also

Fri, 2009-01-02 06:46

when I was in my 20yrs loved to surf, the same thing happened to me, but instead of seaweed, it was a big stingray, but you can image I walked on water, bugger the surfboard.

Really think at the moment you are safer out of the water ie; either surfing or diving. We've had mates that have had  a shark attack the prop of the boat, while they all were retrieving their lines/sea anchor to get the hell out of there and they were in a 26' boat, it send shivers down your spine.

With all the people throwing baits down for crabs / crays at the moment and the increased amount of people on holiday with baits in the water why wouldn't the sharks be attracted

weary!

Fri, 2009-01-02 10:47

I hear where your coming from Dean. Despite having the Shark Shiled on i'm being more careful atm to where i'm diving also. The spots i've previously been diving have had both big GW's ( a few) & one big tiger. Originally i shrugged it off but the realism has made me more weary atm!

Still diving, just being smarter that's all and when i was out yesterday i saw ONE dive boat only for the whole time period in areas that are normally "loaded" with dive boats!

A seal turns up every now

Fri, 2009-01-02 23:17

A seal turns up every now and then at Trigg.

At dusk they scare bejebus out of you when they zoom up and burst out of the water.

They have this cheecky grin, " Ha! ha!, just f@#$&in with ya!

They are big.

I was at the coombe on my own one morning when I got buzzed by a dolphin a few times. It clearly thought what it did to my heartrate was hillarious. Pesky thing got so close I could've licked it.

Spent many years surfing when I was younger, so I know where you are coming from. I remember surfing down at mandurah once - my brother and I walked over the dunes to see perfect 2m sets and loads of guys just standing around - not in the water. When we looked out we saw two clumps of 'seaweed' in the breaks. Bugga this, we said and paddled out. It was only when we got out there that we realised the two clumps of seaweed where two schools of sharks anout 2 meters on length. Sure, nothing too dangerous, but made you a bit weary for your tottsies hanging over each side of the board whilst waiting for sets. Especially when I bombed out and landed right in the middle of one pack Surprised. I reckon I 'bounced' back on my board Tongue outLaughing

People are scared

Mon, 2009-01-05 08:05

I went for a swim yesterday at Leighton and there was hardly anyone swimming.  Heaps of people walking but no one in the water.

First time I saw a shark

Mon, 2009-01-05 09:52

First time I saw a shark whilst in the water was when I was 15.  It was a black tip  and it zipped pass left to right then right to left.  I damned near swallowed my snorkle.  Ever see a snorkler try to reverse fast! LO!  I must have looked really funny!

I still stop and do a 360 everynow and again just to see what is around me, but I am sure I would stain my wetsuit if I saw a big shark!

Lano is the worst for seals.

Mon, 2009-01-05 11:10

Lano is the worst for seals. I hate the things when surfing. Scarry as to start, then you always know what eats em ay? Had one up @ lano chewing on my leggie, and the stink of it's breath - mate fishy as.

Surfed notso-Secret-Harbor yesty and 2 x groms tried to stop me saying 2 x sharks were spotted there in the morning. I still went out, figured they would have moved off - or could have been "weed". Glad I went out got a few nice little wind wedges to schralp and make most of last holiday day.

food chain

Mon, 2009-01-05 17:18

i,m pretty sure nothing eats the great white..

but we eat alot of fish, is this the reason why they r coming in closer and doing random attacks looking for food, the population of gw grows with nothing to stop it whilst its food stocks get hammered..

not sure where this is going but it used to be ,as i grew up surfing out of the way spots down south where i live in deep water or rotto u,d expect to see 1 but a few metres of a beach you wouldnt expect..and in 15yrs of surfing metro before moving south i didnt see or hear..

quite often guys surfin bears see one swimming.. i know guys that have had 1 swim right under them..i have seen one a cple months back but luckily i was in my boat..

i dunno but maybe its time to net some popular beachs to make it safe, or we need to kull, not a positive attitude..

open for comments friendly..
