Way Down South for a week

Just returned from another week down Albany "way" primarily for my brothers wedding but with the boat in tow I managed to wet a line a few times when the weather allowed.

First weekend was spent mostly catching bream at a certain fired up location that had a few hundred black bream schooled up all over size with the biggest up to 40cm+. Unfortunately the new waterproof camera was forgotten so I missed some awesome footage of fish all under the boat during several sessions. Plastics and bait accounted for over 60 fish with only a couple kept to keep us fed while we camped the 2 nights.

Next trip was mid week with a good weather forecast I took my good mate Adrian out deeper to explore a new area. Initial sounding around of the area started to have me worried as it looked fairly featureless until finally we found a good show and from there we found several nice lumps. Adrian started on bait while I sent down some plastics and jigs. I didn't take long till Ade had a nice black ass onboard followed by a nice nannygai to me. Adrian soon switched to try the jigs with a pirate style eupro jig while I fluttered a fanky around. The fishing turned on with instant hook ups as soon as we hit the bottom with a couple more nannygai, skippy, black ass, a few big leatherjacket, and plenty of seargant bakers keeping us guessing.

Then it was time for a big hookup with Adrain getting smashed a fair way off the bottom and had us calling it for a small kingie with the silent hope of a dhuie in the back of our minds. We were stoked when we saw the silver and purple sides of a beautiful dhuie come to the surface, the first landed on my new boat! It went 8kgs on my possibly dodgy scales and was nailed on a 100g red eupro pirate style jig.

The fishing slowed down on the bottom but the surface was alive as far as we could see with tuna breaking the surface in every direction and the sound of the splashing easily travelled over the glassy water. Beautifullllllllll day. After a few fruitless casts at the tuna I had given up chasing them and wouldn't you know it, hooked one on the way down to the bottom on jig!

After getting no more hits on the jig for a few drifts I couldn't resist dropping a bait down and first drop resulted in us finally getting the most common southern fish we always seem to get, a nice queen snapper.

Oh I also forgot that sometime during the day after winding up our jigs we noticed something brown cruising around under the surface, almost looking like a wobby or something until we realised it was a huge squid! Adrian kept the jigs over the side while I quickly tied on a squid jig and in that time another squid had joined the party. The bigger one hit the mcarthy plastic and then darted away but I managed to get tied up and in the water with the smaller one nailing it. A very solid squid caught in 50m of water over 6km from the nearest land. It went 37cm on the tube measurement and that was the smaller squid. The bigger one was seriously close to twice the size!

Anyway, turned out to be a great day out with Adrian landing another small tuna on the troll back in. It was great exploring some new areas and finding some productive ground in the new tub. Only bummer was trying to retrieve the boat without a winch handle which went missing on the launch! It was slow going with an adjustable spanner.

Last trip out was on saturday morning when I took my dad out for an inshore fish for some squid and kg whiting. Beautiful glassy conditions greeted us and we quickly had a couple of solid squid onboard from the first drift. We then hunted for some KG but from a few hours of moving around we only managed one big boy to my old man and a few undersize. The herring and skippy were plentiful though and made up the numbers for a feed that night. Another fun trip out. Also sorry no pics for the trip either!

Good old southern waters, love it!

Can't beat the south for putting some tasty meals on the table.

Looks like you scored some of that "not often enough" weather down there too.

How deep did you get the nannygai in mate?
