Weber BBQ still top choice???

Need to dump current bunnings bbq and spend a little on a decent quality gas bbq

Are the weber Q's still the go or are there any others worth a look that are built to last ??

Only really cooking for 6 ish max

mine gets a flogging

Sat, 2014-02-15 14:06

probably 5 out of 7 nights a week.
go the one with the thermostat as it has a taller lid and is great for roasts.
very good on gas, in fact I havnt changed bottles this summer.
only neg is if you put something heavy on the side boards they will bend down a bit. don't leave plates or weighty things on it overnight.
and they don't work like a normal bbq - you need to keep the lid down at all times.

there are probably some close to knock offs around but honestly its worth the price.

 I'm the same-love cooking on

I'm the same-love cooking on the Weber, and the food results are fantastic.

I've got two- The Family Q for large roast.Cook a whole chicken standing up in it.

-Then I've got the small Q100 with temp guage in the lid. Use this on the balcony and when camping. Best steaks you ever tasted on these.

Best steaks

As Moking says, best steaks ever. I've never had a bad feed come off the Q. Cooked just about everything you can think of as well. Highly recommend them!

I love the old style weber

I love the old style weber kettles for roasting.  Always try and throw on some sawdust on the heat beads to give a bit more smokey flavour.

My favourite are dinosaur bone steaks

Always been a traditional BBQ fan

Mon, 2014-02-17 12:19

Then moved up to Karratha. Had to decide whether it was worth transporting the large BBQ (8 burner with side wok burner etc) up, or get a cheapy up there. Instead stored the large one, and bought a Weber Q. Never looked back. And now that I have my big BBQ back I save that one for a big barbie, and use the Q for the family and camping as it is soo easy to use. Hard to "kill" a steak and it grills better IMO than a standard BBQ.

Love it.

Versus a normal Weber Kettle is mostly used as an outdoor oven - ie good for roasts or whatever you would do in an oven, with the addition that it adds smoke flavour to the meat. The heats high and sears the flavour in. We all know what a conventional BBQ is. The Q's are a compromise between both, in that the heat is trapped under the lid, so it cooks like a hotplate/grill, and uses confection to cook like a kettle Weber.

What I like about it is that you should use it as mentioned above with the lid down, and it at least makes a steak cook easier by keeping the heat up on the side that is not connected to the grill. But also it can be used as a "normal" small BBQ with the lid up. I have replaced the hotplate with a grill so mine have 2 grills. I think this works better for all BBQ food and only ever uses a hotplate for onions and other fare that needs a flat surface to contain it.

I heard on the ABC radio just prior to Ozzie day someone from some BBQ guru site/products speak about Australians and their BBQs. I think he hates hotplates, and said there is only one good thing about them, and that is that they all sink to the bottom of the ocean at the same rate. He rated Australians as poor BBQers compared to yanks and South Africans, who basically only uses grills or grill types.

i just repaced mine

Mon, 2014-02-17 19:09

after 25 years faithful service I have just replaced my old style webber with the same style , living in the Pilbara I used to invite local girls around for Sunday diner and used my webber to impress the local girls with my culinary skills (got lucky a few times) . The bonus was I was I had cold leg of lamb sangers for work for the next few days. That old webber could have told some story's it even got stolen once when I was over seas' but I got it back after a very serious discussion with the bloke up the street in Dampier (apparently he was just borrowing it)

Pretty much - remove loin

Mon, 2014-02-24 22:00

Pretty much -

remove loin from plastic wrap

dry skin with kitchen towel

get stanley knife and cut right through skin and into fat in lines 5-10mm apart all along the roast

I poured a kettle of boiling water over skin to open cuts up then dried with paper towel and rub salt in generously

leave overnight in fridge uncovered (to help dry out skin)

remove from fridge a couple hours before cooking to let it come up to room temp - re apply salt

start weber on high with foil and trivet and preheat for half an hour to really get it cranking (out of the wind) 250c +

shove loin in and keep temp at full for 30 min (mine sat at 225 - 230c) then wind back temp to half and wait for thermometer to hit 145f.

This is probably what you are referring to. They can also be made from aluminium kegs. Youtube has a few vids if you do a search.
