Wednesday Fish. With maps and photo

So making the most of forced early retirement (redundancy) I headed out for a fish today with the old man.

Launching at Woodmans point at a very gentlemanly hour of 0915, we headed out to the north western end of Garden Island to try for some of those fake pink snapper. I tried an old waypoint directly west of Herring Bay which wasn't showing any fish, so I proceeded north for half a mile to some broken ground. There were fish around though they didn't seem like our assortment of plastics. A few more waypoints were picked up over the next two hours before we headed north without anything to show for our efforts.

From Garden Island, we bashed into the 10 or so knots of NNE breeze to a waypoint I was given west of Stragglers. It was at this point my Raymarine Dragonfly decided to shit itself, lose GPS and the bottom, for around 20 minutes. Lucky for me, I have C-Map on my phone so I was able to get close to the point, though without seeing bottom, it was a bit tough.

Plastics once again did nothing for us here, and by now, last weeks squid had defrosted enough so chunks of that went down for an almost skippy (got to the boat before it got away. That and a wrasse was all we got out there, so time to head in for some squid.

Once thing that amazed me today was how filthy the water was. Once the sounder was working again, going over 4m lumps, you couldn't see the bottom. Even a 2.8m lump, you could see that it was shallow, though couldn't actually see the rock. (South of Champion rock)

We continued in to where I had previously had some luck with some nice squid, at the Windmills. Our waypoint proved initially unsuccessful though due to losing patience with squidding, I threw down a piece of squid and straight away I had a nice sixed sand whiting.

What followed was around an hour of fish after fish after fish, including small flathead, herring and even a large squid (left a jig in as we drifted). I had landed four whiting, on the same piece of bait, in the time that it took Dad to cut off his squid jig and tie on a hook.

After we figured we had enough for a feed, we headed south towards Mewstone and found another patch of weed to drift over, again landing another squid whilst ignoring my rod.

Mewstone was next for a cast in for some tailor. I lost my second, brand new stick bait on the reef (two in two days), though without catching any tailor, identified that there are still plenty of very active salmon there (casting a white Ricter plug).

Final stop was some weed just inside Mewstone which proved to be unsuccessful, so we continued home.

7 hours out on the boat for a reasonably nice feed of whiting.

Still unable to crack that Pinky curse, or anything for that matter on my waypoints off Garden Island though I will keep harassing the ocean.

Cheers

Mate, I feel your pain with the Pinky curse.  Have spent countless cold nights trying the same sorts of areas as you as well as in the Sound without any luck.  Haven't had too many problems further off shore for demersals, but the inshore snapper have certainly eluded me!

Good job with the feed.

You are very close to good ground Swompa

Thu, 2015-07-02 10:49

Last Tuesday caught 4 snapper and a 71cm DHU + some skippy and 2 king George in under 2 hrs.

Not far from your way point.

Sorry to rub salt, Just to tell you are not very far.

My tip is gentle men hours doesn't work for snapper.

Cheers

What water depth were you in when you had the jig out when you were fishing, and how deep did you have the jig?  always thought they had to be near the bottom?

After a hand full of early

Thu, 2015-07-02 13:33

After a hand full of early mornings and discovering a (very well marked) rock in my boat, I don't really care about the pink bream. I was planning on a squid and whiting run though the old boy wanted to have another go at it so we did.

At Garden Island we were in 6-15m of water, and off stragglers, we were in around 20 which came up to 7 (according to my plotter as the sounder went and pood itself)

The dog comes with me and is generally a real pain in the arse, particularly when the net comes out.

Kiddo poked the squid and fish, but better yet, ate both. Loved the fish so even more reason to catch a feed.

Pretty sure I saw you out on

Fri, 2015-07-03 11:32

Pretty sure I saw you out on the bank swompa, I was fishing just south of you in a yellow boat when you pulled up. All I managed out there was wrasse, rocks (unusual number of bust offs)  and a nice flatty just out the back of stragglers. Was going to stay out for sunset but the weather was looking a bit ominous so I stopped off for a squid and knocked off 10 in about 20min inside carnac on the way home
