Sunday Fishing

Mon, 2005-09-19 09:43

We had a ball of a day out yesterday.. Left at 9am and out at our spot by 11, from Ocean Reef.. Biiiig swell out there yesterday, definately the biggest of the year!! Close to 4 meters and very chunky with steep drop offs..

Firstly we stopped of to get some live bait which didn't take long.  Unfortunately we didn't hookup any pelagics on them, but they seemed to work well on the bottom fish that liked the fresh bait that still had some kicks in them.

After that, we decided to anchor up and whilst the boys got their stuff ready, i berleyed up the old mulies and got it ready.. I was the cameraman for the day as my shoulder is buggered at the moment..  First fish was a nice 3kg baldy.. Then things started heating up!  Gribbo hooked a 55cm dhuie, then mark hooked one at 47cm - double header with a nice king george on the bottom.. Both released succesfully and the king george kept..  All on video..  I then proceeded to check out how hot the bite was and timed mark putting it down till the bite.. Well, 15 seconds after getting to the bottom, whack, double header dhuies, 52cm and 46cm, both released..  Same time the otherside of the boat the captain hooks into a 3kg sand snapper..   By the time gribbo got to the bottom he was also into another 50cm dhuie which was released.

After 20 minutes of heat the 'good fish' came to an end.. Then the rays and big port jacksons came in.. Pretty much ruined the spot, but it was all on video and a damn good watch.. Will get it up on the site this week..

Only one more King George was hooked after going on the drift.  Most notable was that the bite was one hour after the high tide for about 25-30 minutes.. They may have been on the bite before we got there, but were extremely hot for quite a while there..  Best on Deck (BoD award) went to Mark, for 3 released dhuies (2 oversize), 1 baldchin, 2 king george, a fat port jackson (released)..

Pretty good day out on the water.

Baldy

Boy do they give some good headshakes.. They just want to rip the rod out of your hands most times.  Best is catching the +5kg in shallow water, those things pull like freight trains and need full lock sometimes.

Definately rate them up there as one of the better table fish.  Plump, soft and very white and a good flavour to go with them, definately high up there on the -to catch - to eat list.
