in asia i have eaten some strange stuff, chicken guts, fertilised eggs,Durien (really stinks but tastes ok)
worst thing i ate was something that looked like haggis, when i asked what it was i was told its a pigs stomach and the contents are what was in it already when it was killed, needless to say a trip to see huey was imminent.
I have learned very quickly never ask what it is !

lots of weird and wonderful crap

Mon, 2009-07-13 06:55

when in asia, you kinda go with the flow.

I ate a century egg or "thousand year old egg" - its a preserved egg and the white part turns a brown colour and looks like jelly and the yolk is green. Stinks pretty bad as well. Its an acquired taste and it tastes nothing like an egg.

Also another weird one (and I have no idea how to spell the actual name) is corn smut - a fungus that grows on corn, also known as a mexican truffle. Looks hideous, taste is not too bad.

google them if you dare......

To go with the corn smut, how about stinky tofu? Its tofu that has gone mouldy.

In the deep countryside of Japan I tried - blowtorch roasted beehive.  Get a toothpick and eat the roasted larvae.  Tasted ok and high in protein.

Asia seems to have the wierdest stuff

Fri, 2009-07-17 18:29

I have eaten some strange stuff in China, including ducks tongues, geese intestines and the membrane from around a pigs liver - all considered top tucker in Chongqing.  I trecked into Burma (illegally) about 15 years ago and while camped in a Karen hill tribe village, ate some sort of caterpillar that lives inside bamboo.  Apparently it is local delicacy.  Alternatively, I was being conned!  Anyway, it tasted crap.

I forgot snake and frogs and carp....

Fri, 2009-07-17 18:37

I forgot to mention also eating snake (tough and tasteless), frogs (whole, including bones - not just the succulent legs like I love eating in France) and carp we caught at a "fishing lake" in China.  The carp came out of water that was so brown it looked like solid mud.  I had no idea how deep it was, until a worker who was netting the lake in a boat got his net caught on something, and stepped out of the boat to untangle it.  The water came up to his knees.  I had been taken to the lake by Chinese business associates and I thought we were catching the carp to release, only to find they were cooked up for our lunch - smothered in chillies and szechuan peppers of course.  I would never have voluntarily eaten a fish from that sort of water, but it was a bit hard to refuse, and I lived (well to date anyway).
