This spot

This spot is not the first place if fished, but is where it all began for me in my fishing life. My Grandfather would take me to Woodies (Woodmans point ) when i was 5 years old. (I am now 45.)

We would use blobs and wogs (Wood floats and maggots) to catch Herring and Gardies. He taught me to turn the floats on a wood lathe and to grow the maggots. We would set out before sunrise to get a good spot that is right near the picture posted.

My grandfather lost his right hand in WW2, but could cast way beyond most other fishers there, and always had his own special blend of pollard to get the fish around our baits. We used long cane rods, with small Mitchel reels and 6lb mono.

When we arrived at woodies he always took in who was fishing, and we never got in anyones way, setting up to fish giving plenty of room to the other fisho's. He taught me to aproach others with respect and ask if we could fish within their zone, but not pushing them out of the spot they set up in.

He also showed me not to just fill a bucket because the fish are on the chew, we only took what we were going to eat. My grandfather would make me help with filleting all the fish, and wow could he fillet Herring. With one hand he would put most people to shame on the speed and efficiency required for the humble Tommy Ruff.

Now don't think for one minute my Pop would do it all with one hand. No, he had a socket made for his right arm, and bought fittings to make tools and knifes to make life easier. He made quite a few knife blades to fit his arm socket for different reasons.

This one pictured is his filleting knife.

Ok. so not trying to hyjack your post, but Steve is not the first person to catch KG,s at this spot. 40 years ago me and Pop also got a few nice KG's there. We also caught some Snapper, Bonito ,Tailor,Tarwine, and it once was the spot to get all the blue grabs you could handle.

To this day it still is one of the best land based fishing spot around, and if you give it a good go you will find not only all the bread and butter fish, but quite a few surprising catches to tick the bucket list of with a big red X. I have seen Mackies and even Tuna swiming around that small rock wall, and even into the shallow bay at the car park.

Keep asking questions, and keep trying different spots . Some of my best fishing has come from persisting at some place, or someware that others have forgot about.

Yes agree and I still use my Dad's wooden blobs when herring fishing from the beach,I even swam out to get one when I cast to hard and snapped the line.

The wooden blobs have a chiseled grove in them to hold the burley when casting out.

Good info on woodies area fishing , we skin dive it a bit too , and there still is alot of life around those groynes, ( ie landbased f.a.d.s)

I did my apprenticeship at the old midland workshops , and met lots of the old boys , whom were retiring in the early 80,s that

had lost hands and arms in not only conflicts but in idustrial accidents too.

The stainless claw was the best available then , and one guy took great delight in scrapping across metal , much to the winceing

of others , but all that I met had a jovial nature and keep there sense of humour , thats how most handled it then, no shrinks to analize there loss

I suppose.

thanks .

I went there a while ago and just got hammered by small blowfish. Hope you have more luck than me Kingfisha. Did hook a herring on a tiny surface popper but it threw the hooks before I got it ashore and got nothing after that unfortunately
