What could have been...

Hi all

My daughter was keen to go fishing, especially after seeing the dhuie I caught just after Christmas. So we headed out from Dawesville this morning and headed out 'sort of west'. After checking out a couple of marks without success, we headed out a bit further and found some nice arches on the sounder.

I think we were getting 'wrassed' because we could feel lots of little bites which only resulted in the continual loss of bait. Then, all of a sudden there's the familiar scream of line being pulled from the reel. As it stopped, the daughter started to gain some line back, only to lose it again with another long run. The excitement at the possibility of her first dhuie (or first decent fish, at least), however, was short lived because all of a sudden the weight on the line was gone...bugger

When she retrieved her line, there's a rather dead looking wrasse which she'd hooked, and had obviously been grabbed by something big....never got to see any colour so we don't know what it was.

I boated a 50cm blackarse which she took home as a consolation prize!

The wind turned southerly around lunchtime so we headed back in and by the time we got back to the ramp, the seabreeze was in!! A nice day on the water and it was good to wet a line with my daughter.

regards

Both my kids enjoy fishing

Sun, 2011-01-09 19:43

As they've been doing it since they were both quite young. There's a renewed interest now now that we have the bigger boat...they're keen as to get out there amongst it and catch a few big fish. She overshadowed her brother who failed to trouble the scorers last Monday, but his fishing trips out from Leeman give him the last laugh over her....sibling rivalry is alive and well in our family!!

 well done to your daughter

well done to your daughter for holding onto whatever it was for a while.the damage to the wrasse looks like a cod attack so my gues would be a dhuie. i have caught a dhuie after a wrasse was hooked so it does happen. hope you get the big one next time

on second look, I'd agree with cuttle fish. Few beaky marks on it.

Would a cuttlefish peel line?

Mon, 2011-01-10 15:27

The way the line was peeling off the reel, it seemed to me to be something of 'size'. Would it be possible for a cuttlefish to run hard and fast enough to put that sort of bend into a 10kg outfit???

She's still convinced it was a big fish....something at least as big as my dhuie!!

just a big cuttly

Mon, 2011-01-10 16:03

mate. They have a lot of weight behind them .Going by the bites out of the wrasse i would say it was a cracker.Lucky she didnt get it up because it would be a good chance her shirt would be a lot blacker than it is in the pic.As well as your boat.

Maybe a cuttlefish grabbed

Mon, 2011-01-10 15:33

Maybe a cuttlefish grabbed the wrasse, then something grabbed it?

She won't buy it!

Mon, 2011-01-10 16:06

If I tell her that popular opinion from this website suggests that a big cuttlefish grab her wrasse, I'm sure she'll flatout refuse to believe any of you guys...I think she'll hold on to the idea that it was a big dhuie that got away

hey till

Mon, 2011-01-10 16:07

could those marks be from those ball shaped grinding  plates in the back of a big dhuies throat??? if a big dhu was trying to get the wrasse down,? as you probably know after they inhale a bait/fish those grinders take it from there and push it down the stomach, i'm not sure but the marks look about the right size ????

It would have needed to take the wrasse in

Mon, 2011-01-10 16:17

turn it around then have its head and the hook half way down it throat in order the grind it and then spat it half way out and have another crack it it.The leader would have been rasped to bits and thee rig would be gone.If you still have the rig check it for and damage..It i picture perfect big cuttlefish all the way but tell her it must have been a 20 kilo plus dhu

I've checked the rig and....

Mon, 2011-01-10 17:14

the loop where the hook attaches is chaffed. The way the wrasse is foul hooked, whatever took the wrasse would had to have chomped the head to bits before the hook would have been effective in securing whatever attacked the wrasse.

She's still insisting on it being a big dhuie

what might have been

Mon, 2011-01-10 19:55

i agree it looks (sort of ?) like a cuttly attack but we"ve caught plenty out of two rocks between 3-8kg and although they put a decent bend in the rod they certainly don"t smoke off on runs they take short bursts and" pulse" just like a squid only heavier and judging by the look of the rod and description of the runs it just doesn"t add up cuttlys normally grab the fish and chew on the one spot so you get a big hole or the fish gets nearly eaten in half  so i"m not convinced???
