We had this before but thought it time to revisit as so many new members.
Good to know what everyone does for a crust.
Me as most of you know have a small steel fab shop.
Mostly oil and gas , some structural and a lot of maintenace work for Coles etc.
Love it apart from the tax man.

I've gone back to the exploration drilling game Andy, and I'm glad that I did. The HME undercarriage game stopped being enjoyable during covid as it was all WFH and office work during that time.

I’m the luckiest man alive.
Bit of a role reversal at our place. My wife's the one with the brains and she's the breadwinner, she works away and I get her for two weekends and a full week every month. I've been playing the house bitch for the last five years and it's better than good....(:
I've got the daily house routine down to about half an hours worth of work ( mainly cleaning the pool) then I'm a free man. No kids, just a 14 year old dog to keep happy. Currently getting the big duck ready for summer in FNQ.
My wife understands why I clean my rods n reels in the shower....

My company is owned by the people of Western Australia and we are the largest electricity generator in the state. I make sure contractors and our people are all getting on nicely.
Prior to that -
18 months in Marine Chandlery at ACM in Fremantle
Couple of years as a draftsman > Sales / project management for grating and handrail projects > HSE rep > Purchasing for a mob in Belmont
7 years of Procurement and Logistics coordination for Maersk Drilling operations
1.5 years of procurement and logistics for an international mob running an FPSO for Woodside
6 months as a procurement specialist with Quadrant looking after a FPSO.
6 months off work in that time when O&G shat the bed. Redundancy payout is great until you cant get a job....

Woodside , Shutdown planning and execution for offshore assets. My passion is timber lure making, gives me a break from the high pressure environment of offshore execution.
Been very lucky to sell lures all over the world the last couple of years and met and a lot of really cool people who live out their dreams.

Ha ha
Yeah I can see how you could get to that position. Pretty lucky here, we get to do all the weird and out there stuff - lots of one off high end bespoke joinery. Including solid timber which is what I love doing the most. Still using my pops old buzzer / thicknesser etc in that area - bullet proof! I'd hate to just be doing kitchens / bathrooms thats for sure! We also put one apprentice on every year and watching them progress is pretty rewarding - if they make it! we run about a 50% ratio who have the right attitude and get past a year

Hate it but it pays the bills. Company I'm with now makes it easier. Good people.
After 20 years of it I could with with a change but getting on the same money isn't easy.
Unfortunately as I get older people seem to find new and interesting ways to do dumb shit.
Hoping to semi retire to short term project roles in the next 5-10 years.

So True
After 20 years working for some big companies, including writing very safisticated safety systems I can tell you the best thing you go do is not hire idiots.
And if you accidently do, get rid of them.
Unfair dismissal is alway cheaper than workers comp!

Tough Day
I've used speakers like that before.
A former tree climber now in a wheel chair and a truckie now missing his leg from a forklift.
They work well with younger workforces.
Some of us were lucky enough to work around our Fathers/Uncles growing up as kids.
Didn't feel lucky at the time from the constant critersism but you learned how to work.
Guess that's why I'm lucky enough to become a grumpy old man

Still the same. Service
Still the same. Service Supervisor/ Technical Lead for a mining and oil & gas contractor. Sparky background and still spend a fair bit of time on the tools.
Last 13 years or so in the Pilbara but just relocated back to Perth for kids schooling and wife's work relocation.
Would love a bit more time off but massive labour shortage is keeping my under the pump lately.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

started of at HJ's for 2 years after school wouldnt take me back.
then did a fibreglass traineeship building pools and boats for 3-4 years
wild flower picking for a year
labourer to project/contracts manager in the civil construction industry for 16 years doing underground service installation and culvert installations at wheatstone and various minesites.
got into business with best mate doing underground service installation in Port Hedland. that ended after 4 years due to bad habits. (tip for others dont going into business with mates and if you do make sure you have a rock solid agreement drawn up by a professional.)
