bearded rock cod
Pseudophycis barbata.
Bearded Rock Cod
Colour is reddish-brown above and predominantly white or pink below. A black margin is sometimes found surrounding the dorsal, anal and caudal fins. These fish have small scales and a mucous film covering their bodies
Grows to 70cm and over 6kg in weight, and can live as long as 11 years.
These fish are common to coastal rocky reefs, where they are frequently caught by fishing on the bottom using bait such as fish and squid.
A closely-related species, the red cod, may be caught around wharves and rocky shores at night and can be readily distinguished from the bearded rock cod by a black spot behind the gill covers.
Flesh of both species is white, soft and palatable and the eating qualities may be further improved by smoking.
