Sea fishes of southern Australia
Get him The Sea Fishes of Siuthern Australia by Roger Swainston and Barry Hutchins if he only fishes down south or the Field Guide to Marine Fishes of Northen Australia and South East Asia put out by the WA Museum and you can't go wrong

The artist that illustrated
The artist that illustrated both those books has a book out called Swainstons fishes of Australia, or something similar it is basically a combination of the two aforementioned books and possibly more, its a tad expensive, around $100 or so, but it is massive, its maybe 3 inches thick. I have all 3 books and for quality of images I would say this one is best because it has 1 fish per page rather than 30 or so. Just my 2 cents .
