I see balloons all the time

Sat, 2012-03-10 01:10

Out on the water. Helium balloons floating on the surface. Stop and get them for the kids. They think it's great. They always have a string attached, so likely some kids "show balloon" that's gotten away from them.

In my limited experience

Sat, 2012-03-10 01:24

So far when I've actually hooked up the balloons have split/ripped just above the knot with what looks like 100% of the rubber being retrieved when landing.

If they dont burst from a hook up they come back in where they usually pop on the beach where I quickly pick up the pieces.

I've only had three balloons which wernt retrieved, one from being snagged, one from a bronzi which hit the burley cage which was on the same line as the balloon, and the last one from an asshole boat which cut off the balloon and wrapped my line around the bait.

Looking into finding some sort of mesh bag/stocking to go over the balloon just to catch any pieces from the balloon and the glowstick.

Gas balloons

Sat, 2012-03-10 05:10

Are used for another day, Thay are 20meters  in the air

Only if a big shark went deep you might lose one, If it could pull it under the water But very unlikey

At 10.00 for two you need to try and used them again, Steeppoint with the sharp cliffface is were you might lose one or two

Balloon

Herbie hit the nail right on the head. Quality balloons and gas are expensive the last thing you want is to loose or pop them.

Anyway I would be more worried about all the empty bait bags and plastic stuffed in the rocks at metro rock walls like mindarie

Rod and line

Slider so balloon can move up and down the line, And 20m from the light line on to the  slider to balloon

Right amount of gas so balloon skips the bait on the water, If it comes up and out of the water a meter and then hits the water Its set upright

For those interested (as we should be) I have sent an email to Berkley. I am sure they will be happy to provide information about environmental issues relating to soft plastics. They seem to care....... Once I get a response I will post here. The questions raised here are very valid and I commend each of you for doing so. I have a particular interest in the ecosystem. That doesn't go so far as to ban everyone from fishing by closing everything down. Being informed is all a part of sustainability.

precious you reckon uncle?

is there a problem with wishing to preserve what we have?

sure we are not all angels, but we can do our bit and collectively give our future generations a planet which they can look back on and say' gee im glad my dad/ mum/ grandparents et al took the time to be responsible for their own actions'

or we can continue not caring.....

the international law for disposing of rubbish at sea should be scrapped and rewritten as no rubbish is to be disposed of at sea in my opinion

in the grand scheme of things

Fri, 2012-03-16 19:31

I think balloons are insignificant when compared to the amount of crap we pump into the ocean from our outboards.

I wonder how many boaties who like to think of themselves as being a bit of a greenie when it comes  to protecting the

ocean have any idea how much pollutants we dump every hour into the ocean from our motors

Heres a link from fisherman and boat owner to the outboard database by gary fooks flick to page 73.

Makes you think.
