What a Haul :)
Went out Fishing today woke up at 3:15 for the 2 hrs drive to the river waded through the almost chest deep water to the fishing spot at 5 am pitch black out cant see a dam thing so walked by flashlight flicked it over to the other bank and saw a BEAR me and buddy went oh crap so he fished for a while as i kept watch for the bear
then within 30 mins some other guys showed up and we got to Fishing with in 20 minutes of me starting i hooked a very sweet arse 20lb Chinook Salmon of witch i had to chase it down stream was also the very first fish of the day
and then 5 minutes later bagged a nice 10lb Coho let my buddy use my rod and he slammed a Chinook and a Coho just as fast so we are up 4 fish now and the day is just starting so we played around for a while the fishing got very slow so i let my buddy fish and after a bit he snapped the line off so we retied it and out i went this time i said to him watch this and within 5 tosses i had another 10lb beauty Coho on the end of the line brought it in and gave my buddy the rod back and he grabbed his last Coho 5 minutes before we left as you can only have 4 fish in total and only 2 can be Coho we WAS STOKED having got the Extra Chinooks for the day as well
This was how my day Today went the last pic is of the first 4 fish caught in less than 30 mins

Good catch Mate
I know what a chinook is, but the coho looks like a trout and a salmon. Is it a salmon?
At least here we only have to worry about croc's, not bears, and then it is only way up north.
Nice report.

The Coho
yes it is a Salmon one of the tastiest the meat is a bright orange and very very tasty the Coho is a 3 to 5 year fish it spends first year in a river then migrates to the ocean for the next 4 years
and yes Big John it is alot of fun i look forward to this time of the year every year and i have recentlly expanded my search for Salmon this gets me out fishing for them over 6 months out of the year now

The Gear
today i was using a 10 foot 6 shimano rod and just your average trout reel with 80lb braided line and a 25lb leader
The set up is as follows lead stuffed in a pieice of rubber tube attached to the braided line so it bounces the bottom of the river line goes down to the swivel where i have a 12 foot 25lb leader line attached at the end is a small 2/0 hook and a tiny peice of RED wool
yes wool we are not allowed to use bait if you really wanna see the rig ill take a pic of the rod and the setup later and post it

80lb braid. holy hell hole.
80lb braid. holy hell hole. is that so you can rip the fish out of the bears claws??
nice work and some great fish!
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Well, with a 25lb leader,
Well, with a 25lb leader, you've still got 25lb max breaking strength. Maybe its to do with abrasion or having the line closer in diameter (but still mostly no stretch).
Makes me want to book a flight to Canada...

Leader and line
reason for the Heavy line is due to the fact you can get fish up to and over 80lbs in them rivers i had a 45lb Chinook on the other day fought with him for an hr and ended up loosing him due to the fact he had run through a pile of rocks and left abrasions on the line also the fish have very very sharp teeth and can cut you line it its not strong enough braided line offers no stretch at all and being able to feel whats going on is key to having a very great day later today ill put the rod together and take a couple pics and show you the way its rigged up
its the game of big fish big line if you try to muscle a fish thats heading downstream on a 12lb bit of line theres no way in hell you gonna see it ever again cause thats a fish that will go where he wants when he wants and will snap you line in a heart beat
