What is a Kayak?

hi all, I am going crabbing in a couple of days in the river, and was wondering something. I have got 2 kayaks and am going to drop the nets off them, but want to know if a kayak is legally known as a boat? Because the bag limit is 10 crabs land based or 20 from a boat.

thanks,

lachie

The boat limit is only twenty if you have two licenced fisherman.  If you only have one licence then it is ten.  is it a two person kayak?

One (licensed) person on a kayak = 10 crabs

two (licensed) persons on a kayak = 20 crabs

two (licenced) persons on two kayaks = up to 10 crabs each (potentially 20 crabs)

four (licensed) persons on two kayaks = up to 20 crabs per kayak (potentially 40 crabs)

My best educated guess is that a kayak would fit the definition of a boat.

Well it is. It's just not a "Powered boat" so you will not need a RBFL to fish from it.

Yeah bag and boat limits apply to kayaks as if you were in a boat, you just a RFBL as they aren't powered boats

I think the moral of the story is that fisheries are very good and milking you for as many different types of license as they can i.e. Freshwater Fishing License to catch 'noxious' Red Fin Perch that they 'encourage' you kill indeed!!!!

So if we don't have a boat

So if we don't have a boat fishing license, is it illegal to fish off a kayak? It is 2 people on 2 different kayaks, so it looks like it's going to be 40 crabs?

 No.  personal limit is 10.

No.  personal limit is 10.  2 people = 20 max.  it's not illegal to fish off a kayak.  you just don't need a rfbl.  but the limit is still only 10 per person.  Just like if you were standing on a jetty.  you can fish for crabs, but only keep 10 per person.

Yeah Sammy I did say it 2 people 2 yaks but never mind. Realised that the 20ish metres on my nets wasn't long anough so gotta add some. But still managed 2 legals but released them at the end of the day because 2 isn't enough for a feed. Made sure they swam off. Lots of little ones and pulled a flatty up in a net which was legal. It was a fun day out though, it's a whole new thing crabbing off a kayak.

thanks for the replies,

lachie

for all official purposes the flathead was "released" as you are not allowed to keep any bycatch while crabbing. Just a heads up, my mate got done for taking a 50cm flathead he got in a crab pot, he had no fishing rods or line on the boat to say he caught it.

Fishing and catching are two different things. But i want to learn how to catch.
