What size for deep drop weights?

Need to make up some sinkers for deep dropping and chasing advice from the deep drop gurus on here as to what weight or range of weights I should be making. Will be fishing in the metro region and probably in the 250 - 450 metre range. Was thinking around 2 kg's would be a good starting point?

Looking to make them out of lengths of old steel rockbreaker pins or similar with loops welded to them.

Cheers

Using 80lb braid

Tue, 2014-03-18 18:15

Thanks guys,

Got 80lb braid on the reel so sounds like 2 kg's may be about as much as I need most days southcity?

Cheers

Rec anglers use tin cans filled with concrete as cheap weights - thought it was a flaming good idea - wonder what a red bull can filled in such a way would weigh ??

Concrete weights

Wed, 2014-03-19 12:05

Concrete weighs in the order of 2,400kg/m3 depending upon the mix. Therefore a 250ml Red Bull can filled with concrete would weigh in the order of 0.6kg or around 21oz.

Depends on the day and

Depends on the day and conditions, like any bottom bashing really.

Been able to use 24oz right out to 300m then 32oz in 500. Depends on the day.

I carry up to 50oz but barely use them. Running Hyper PE 50lb Braid tho, so thin diameter.

Thanks for the responses. I've also read about the "concrete cans" being used before and although they would be cheap, as mentioned by Alan, concrete is not particularly dense so are big for their weight.
Have also heard of window sash weights and large diameter rio bar being regularly used and as I have no problem getting hold of suitable high density steel bars and also cutting and welding equipment it should be a quick and free source of weights (good job for the workshop apprentice!)
Sounding good to make a variety of sizes between 1-2 kg's with maybe just a couple that are heavier for fast currents etc.

Let me know how you go

Intend spending a week up at Jurien when this flaming wind finally eases as deep drop far more accessible at only 17nm west of Escape and would really like to give it a try - have fished 150 metres there hitting huge schools of snapper with just 24 ounce lead sinkers but hell current can be hit and miss up there and up to a couple of knots

I'll keep you posted

I'll keep you posted Gordon, not sure when the first attempt will be as we'll be fitting it in around trolling while we're out at the trench anyway.
Fished quite a few times out to about 200m with standard bottom bouncing outfits and 32oz sinkers no problem but just bought an electric set-up to go much deeper with far less pain - I'm getting too old and soft.
