Ive heard some guys recomend gas charged guns and some guys dont like them at all, looking to get into a bit of spear fishing on this trip Im doing up north.
So anyone with brand and model recommendations please give us some advice so im well prepared to go shopping when i get back in Perth next week.
Money isnt a huge issue so please dont let that sway your recommendations.
Thanks alot,
Kane

Any Rail Gun is Good
Hi Kane, from my experience and what I see in the spearo mags, any of the south african railguns are very good i.e rabitech, rob allen. Reasonably priced and great for smaller reef species up to mackies etc. But there are any brands and models out there to chioce from. I have a 1.3mtr, great stalking reef fish and have nailed a few mackies, as you can see in avatar.

My brother is really into
My brother is really into the Mares Cyrano 1100 with the sealed barrel kit by tovarich. I wouldn't recommend any of the cheaper ones like assos or seac though.
Can't go wrong with a Rob Allen railgun, they're popular for sure. Make sure you get a 7mm spear, 6.5mm is a bit iffy on big stuff apparently.
If you really want to buy state of the art, see if you can find one of those russian or ukranian hydropneumatic by aquatech!
Don't forget to pick up a reel or a float!

RA Tuna
I've got a RA 1000 Tuna with double 16mm rubbers Kane. Packs a punch but a bit short for the bigger bluebone which are often just out of range. If I was buying again I'd buy the same gun but in the 1200 size.
Good thing about the double rubbers is if you find a good trout under a ledge you can drop a rubber so you don't punch through his head and into the rock ledge behind him to forcefully, thus helping keep your spear shaft nice and straight.
Definitely buy a protective chest pad if your going to load against your chest.

Yep
Mates all have Rob Allens, no faults with them and are good guns. Plenty of other options out there, but the RA's are one of the best for the price.

More options
Although RA's are great guns, there are many other options.
Take a Freedivers gun for example (www.freedivers.com.au), practically exactly the same as an RA, reliable trigger mech, PLUS has a teflon rail. This reduces noise on discharge and may offer a slight reduction in the friction co-efficient. Couple that with the fact that they are on offer at 2 stores for $220 in 1.3m and they're a very attractive option. Both identical in design, both made in SA, both tried and tested. Why choose an RA?
Could buy 2 for the price of an RA Caranx or similar, put a 6.6mm shaft in one, with a single 16mm rubber. And the other a bigger shaft with twin 18mm rubbers or something.
Then place an RA next to an Omer Cayman HF and the RA begins to look very boring.
Put an RA next to a Riffe Euro or similar and the RA has nowhere near the punch or range of the Riffe.
Not saying RA's aren't good, I use one myself and it's great, it get's dropped in sand, thrown down rock faces and stepped on in the boat and it works flawlessly. But there are other options, some better options, depending on application and the areas you'll be targetting.
As for chest loading, any decent freediving/spearfishing suit will have one built in. If you have a surf type wetsuit without a chest pad, cut up an old thong and put it underneath your wetsuit. Either that or toughen up
Try www.spearfishing.com.au for advice and products.
Aquasports in QLD are holding the freedivers guns in 1.3m.

Toughen Up?
Wetties are for wimps north of the 26th.
Boardies and a long sleeve rashie are my standard spearing attire. Butt of the gun combined with a nylon rashie isn't the best for ones chest area.
No doubt theres lots of guns to choose from but very happy with the simplicity and durability of my Rob Allen. Being able to drop it on to a reefie bottom when you want to catch a cray and knowing that nothing is likely to go wrong with it is great.

Haha, it reaches 16'C down here! Agreed though.... Didn't realise he was north.
And yes, my RA gets treated like shite and still works too.

Dunno, a friend got rid of a riffe and replaced it with a RA which he is pretty happy with.
Queen snapper? The colours look awfully like a dusky morwong rather than a blue.

Aah, might look like a dusky
Aah, might look like a dusky but I assure you it's a queenie. Seen enough of both. That and who would shoot a dusky...
Queenies are impressive alive or just dead, but lose colour after theyve been on a stringer for a couple of hours.
Will post a larger pic when I get around to it... think I need to upload to a site to share photos?

Yeah, blue morwong or Queen
Yeah, blue morwong or Queen Snapper we call them down here. Very common.
Admittedly not the most challenging fish to shoot either, unless they are in depth.

Horses
Yeah there's some horses up this way that follow you around like pets. Plenty of big green parroties as well but haven't drilled either of them.

Parroties taste very nice up
Parroties taste very nice up that way I thought. Shot a few last time. Funny fish to watch swim, they can swim surprisingly fast with just their pectorals.
Heading up to Steep in a few weeks to do some serious freediving and spearing. Should have some good photos to report.

Steep
That sounds like an interesting trip. Look forward to seeing some pics when you return.
I'm planning to blow away a PB MOAB (mother of all bluebone) in a few weeks time.
